The Poetry Society of New York is pleased to announce the premiere of its renowned event series, The Poetry Brothel, in Boston. The Poetry Brothel is a unique and immersive poetry event that takes poetry outside classrooms and lecture halls and places it in the lush interiors of a bordello. Based in concept on the fin-de-siecle bordellos in New Orleans, Paris, and Buenos Aires, many of which functioned as safe havens where fledgling, avant-garde artists could present their work, The Poetry Brothel presents are rotating cast of poets, each operating within a carefully constructed character, who impart their work in public readings, spontaneous eruptions of poetry, and most distinctly, as purveyors of private, one-on-one poetry readings in back rooms. For a small fee, all of the poets are available for these sequestered readings at any time during the event. Of course, any true brothel needs a good cover; The Poetry Brothel's is an immersive cabaret, offering a full bar, live jazz, burlesque dancers, painters, and fortune-tellers, with newly integrated themes, performances and installations at each event.

The Boston premiere will feature some of New York’s favorite performers, including your master of ceremonies Mister Charley and aerialists The Lost Boys of Circus Solaris. Local talents include esteemed guest readers Robert Pinsky and Steph Burt, burlesque beauty Ginny Nightshade, and house band Hounds On An Island, led by Sara Honeywell.

Robert Pinsky is one of America’s most important poets, essayists, literary critics, and translators. From 1997 to 2000, he served as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. Pinsky is the author of nineteen books, most of which are collections of his poetry. His published work also includes critically acclaimed translations, including The Inferno of Dante Alighieri and The Separate Notebooks by Czesław Miłosz. His most recent poetry collection AT THE FOUNDLING HOSPITAL is out this month from Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. He teaches at Boston University.

Stephen Burt is the author of three poetry collections, Belmont, Parallel Play, and Popular Music, and several collections of critical works. His essay collection Close Calls with Nonsense was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He taught at Macalester College for several years before becoming a professor of English at Harvard University. The New York Times called Burt “one of the most influential poetry critics of his generation.” His writing has appeared in the New York Times Book Review, the London Review of Books, the Times Literary Supplement, The Believer, and the Boston Review.
