Simon Cane appointed UCL’s director of public and cultural engagement

Deputy director to leave Birmingham Museums Trust
Simon Cane, the deputy director of Birmingham Museums Trust, is to join University College London (UCL) in the new year as deputy director of public and cultural engagement.

Cane, who originally trained as a conservator, has held a number of management and leadership roles in local authority and trust museums.

He led the Staffordshire Hoard project at Birmingham and was also a member of the advisory panel for the Heritage Science Research Programme. His research interests include ethics and cultural value.

Cane was the interim director of Birmingham for six months, overseeing a major organisational restructure during that period.

Cane said: “I am excited at the prospect of leading the public and cultural engagement team at UCL and building on their excellent work.

“I am passionate about engaging publics with collections and look forward to working with colleagues across the faculties at UCL to discover new ways of supporting research and teaching using the enormous wealth of resources available at UCL including its Public Engagement Unit, outstanding museums and research collections and the Bloomsbury Theatre.”

The move is the third change in senior management at Birmingham Museums Trust since it was established in April 2012, following the departure of director Ann Sumner in late 2012 and the appointment of its current director Ellen McAdam in July 2013.
