Short Film Round-Up: The Latest News on Irish Shorts

Dublin horror short, ‘Prodigal Son’, has won ‘Best 18+ Film’ at St. Albans Film Festival in England.
IFTN rounds up the latest news on Irish short films ‘Prodigal Son’, ‘Threshold’, ‘The Girl’, and ‘Origin’.

Horror short film, ‘Prodigal Son’, wins award
The Dublin horror short film, ‘Prodigal Son’, has won ‘Best 18+ Film’ at the St. Albans Film Festival in England. ‘Prodigal Son’ was presented with the award on March 10th and the film has now won best film and best actor awards in Ireland, England, and USA.

The film also screens in Munich on St. Patrick’s Day at the 14th Landshuter Film Festival, where it is nominated for the Deadline Award for ‘Best Genre Film’. Written and directed by Dublin playwright C.J. Scuffins for Story Factory Ireland, 'Prodigal Son' tells the story of a gangster's son, Joe, who is brought back from the dead by mysterious corporation Prodigal Inc. after an untimely death. The film stars Ryan Andrews (‘The Clinic’, ‘Fair City’), Padraic Murray (‘The Guards’, ‘The Clinic’), and Jill Sartini (The Blow-Ins).

Short Film ‘Threshold’ wraps principal photography
‘Threshold’ enters post-production after principal photography on the short film recently finished. CarShare Films & SIXSEM Productions shot the film last November and will wrap post-production towards the end of March.

Written by Colin Carters, ‘Threshold’ follows Dee and Kay, both homeless and living in a tarpaulin covered shelter in a city park. The prospect of rehousing forces the couple to examine what it is that they really want from life and what it is they need from each other. Actors Diana O’Connor & Killian Sheridan star as Dee and Kay. The film is also directed by Killian Sheridan and Colin Carters. On completion, the film will be released to festivals nationally and internationally.

IFB Signatures Short ‘The Girl’ receives two nominations at Madrid International Film Festival

The Madrid International Film Festival 2013 has just announced that the Signatures 2012 Short “The Girl” has been nominated for two awards at the Festival. The nominations are in the ‘Best Short Film’ and ‘Best Supporting Actress’ categories.

The Bord Scannán na hÉireann/Irish Film Board Signatures 2012 short film was directed by John Hayes and written by Mark Tuthill. It was produced by Tricia Perrott for Green Sky Productions. ‘The Girl’ will screen as part of the festival programme, which runs from July 1st - 6th of this year.

Funded through the IFB Signatures Programme, ‘The Girl’ is an atmospheric story of an emotionally fragile English woman who moves to the West of Ireland with her husband to try to move on with her life after a series of devastating miscarriages. When she encounters a mysterious stray young girl, her maternal instincts overwhelm her.

The film stars Geraldine Somerville, Stuart Graham, Lalor Roddy, Fred Paul McCloskey and exciting young newcomer Rebecca Carroll. Signatures is a short film scheme for the making of live-action, fiction films that act as a proving ground for Irish creative talents aspiring to write, direct, and produce films for the cinema.

Watch the popular Irish animated short, ‘Origin’
The Irish animated short ‘Origin’ was yesterday released online as part of the Irish Film Board’s ‘Ireland, I Love You’ series of shorts for St. Patrick’s weekend and has been making waves on popular Irish news sites ever since. The short film was made under the Irish Film Board Frameworks short film scheme and is directed by James Stacey, produced by Seán Smith, written by Stacey and Matthew Darragh, with an original score from Kila’s Rónán Ó Snodaigh. The film comes from production company Souljacker and was nominated for an IFTA in 2012 in the Animation category.
