Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Boater off Elliot Key

Officials searched for Mark Myhre after his sailing vessel, the Galilean, was found unoccupied Wednesday

The Coast Guard said Friday evening it has suspended its search for a Wisconsin boater who vanished in South Florida around Christmas, the day he last spoke to his relatives.

Multiple agencies had been searching from Elliot Key to Marathon for Mark Myhre, 62, of Bay City, Wisconsin.

The search kicked off after Myhre's sailing vessel, the Galilean, was found beached and unoccupied Wednesday by a good Samaritan on the ocean side of Elliot Key.

The search effort for Myhre included a helicopter crew, smallboat crew and cutter crew to cover the area, the Coast Guard said. Additionally, Miami-Dade police and fire rescue crews assisted.

As of Friday, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also was helping with the search and investigation, said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Sabrina Laberdesque.

When the good Samaritan found the beached vessel, the person told Coast Guard Sector Miami it had no one on it. The vessel’s lines in the water also had no signs of algae growth, meaning the boat “hadn’t been there very long,” Laberdesque said.

The Coast Guard asks anyone with information about the missing boater to contact the agency in Miami at 305-415-6800 or local police.
