When disaster strikes, be it natural or man-made, essential hospitals are usually on the front lines. Because of their extensive trauma coverage and close relationships with local governments, members of America’s Essential Hospitals are uniquely poised to lead their communities before, during, and after a catastrophic event. They serve on community emergency preparedness committees and participate in metropolitan medical response systems, responding to terrorist attacks and other public health emergencies. Most members also have explicit provisions in their emergency plans to address the needs of vulnerable patients, such as those with limited English proficiency and those with complex medical and social needs.
