SACRAMENTO-

Sacramento’s Ruhstaller Beer got a nod in Bon Appetit magazine’s list of 10 great American farmhouse breweries this week.

The list showcases breweries that grow their own ingredients, saying “beer is as much an agricultural product as wine.” Bon Appetit writer Joshua Bernstein also compares beer to coffee, in the sense that the brew can take on characteristics of the climate and soil in which the ingredients grow.

Ruhstaller recently planted its own hopyard, and uses locally-grown grains. The brewery was founded in 1881 by Swiss immigrant Frank Ruhstaller. It was his third brewery by age 35.

The only other west coast breweries featured in the list are in Oregon, a state known for its craft beer.
