The RPS Music Award nomination is for the 2012 sound Festival, a highlight of which was the Out of the Box opera weekend featuring new commissions from Pippa Murphy and Ben Harrison; John and Zinnie Harris; Gareth Williams and Johnny McKnight; Stephen Deazley and Matthew Sharp, among others, which were staged in unusual places and spaces such as a stables, a lighthouse, a flat, a pub and even on a bus. “We are thrilled to have been short-listed for the RPS’ Concert Series and Festivals Award,” says festival director Fiona Robertson. “sound is fairly young new music festival and works in a slightly unusual fashion – with a network of local partners involved in programming events in the festival, and a very small staff team. The 2012 sound Festival ran from 19 October – 18 November with other highlights including a series of concerts featuring the talented young musicians of NYOS Futures who performed the World Premiere of three sound commissions: Paul Mealor’s Crucifixus with NYCOS and Jeremy Huw Williams, Stephen Montague’s Phrygian Ferment with harpsichordist Elisabeth Chojnacka and Oliver Searle’s Close to Shore for contrabass flute with flautist Richard Craig. This were some of 17 World Premieres at the festival. Others included a sound commission from Robert Saxton, Little Suite for Organ; Geoff Palmer’s A Caedmon Symphony and David Matthew’s Romanza, performed by the acclaimed violinist, Madeleine Mitchell. Other performers included Red Note Ensemble, Rolf Hind, Tommy www.musicplus.org.uk Smith’s Karma; Ruth Wall – the girl with 3 harps; Simon Thacker’s Svara Kanti and Claudia Molitor. Northern Streams Festival - A decade of music, song and dance from around the North Sea Edinburgh : 26-27 April FOR TEN years, Scottish people have had the experience of award winning and emerging artists from Scandinavia and Scotland. The Northern Streams Festival continues this experience in 2013 with: Marit Fält and Rona Wilkie (BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2012) - a Norwegian-Scottish Fiddle/ Mandola/Voice Duo who also won a Danny Kyle award at Celtic Connections. Irmelin - a trio of Sweden's foremost folk singers. Eva Rune joins Karin Ericsson Back and Maria Misgeld, who performed as a duo at Northern Streams 2012, to bring again the best of North Sea traditional vocal music to the festival. Shetland Arts announces Fiddle Frenzy 10th anniversary line up Shetland : 4-11 August Shetland Arts is delighted to announce the line-up for Fiddle Frenzy 2013, its week long Fiddle School and celebration of traditional Shetland musical culture running this year from Sunday 4 to Sunday 11 August. The star-studded line up includes Fiddlers’ Bid, Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham, and Lau. This year’s festival is curated by Shetland fiddle stars Jenna & Bethany Reid. Tickets for The Full Frenzy and tickets for the Week of Classes are already on sale. Tickets for the individual concerts will go on sale on Wednesday 24 April. Fiddlers' Bid will open the festival with a concert on Sunday 4 August in Mareel. They are known internationally as leading exponents of Shetland’s rich fiddle tradition and are global ambassadors for Isles. Since forming in 1991, they have established an identity as a unique band with a harmonious sound developed though many years of playing together. Their 4 fiddle frontline showcases some of Shetland's finest fiddlers Chris Stout, Kevin Henderson, Andrew Gifford and Maurice Henderson, joined by a fantastic backing band featuring harpist Catriona McKay, guitarist Fionan De Barra, and bassist Jonathan Ritch, creating a display of stunning virtuosity at every concert.

Aly & Phil are the headliners for a concert on Monday 5 August in Mareel. No strangers to Shetland, Phil Cunningham and Shetland native Aly Bain have been playing, touring, and recording together since 1988 and to date have recorded four albums and played to thousands around the world. Shetland Arts is delighted to welcome them to perform in Shetland again, helping celebrate the 10th anniversary of Fiddle Frenzy 2013. They are also performing an additional pre-Fiddle Frenzy concert in Cullivoe Hall, Yell, on Saturday 3 August.

As part of their 30th year celebrations, this year’s headliners will be Scottish folk icons, Capercaillie. Founded by Donald Shaw and fronted by Karen Matheson, they have developed a reputation as Scotland's foremost Celtic Band, selling over a million albums and touring in 25 countries. Described as "the most exciting and vibrant band in the field of Celtic music today" (Billboard), their exciting and vibrant live show will make sure the festival finish will be one to remember. Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire are set to make their mark this year with the release of their long awaited eponymous album and they will also join the bill alongside Tiree natives and multi-award winning folk-rock band Skerryvore, who will no doubt get the 1500 strong crowd dancing. Mànran, have recently rocketed to the top of the Scottish music scene with their powerful combination of Gaelic/English songs, making them an exciting addition to the TMF bill. Electric Folk band Washington Irving, who recently supported Frightened Rabbit across the UK, will also be making an appearance, as will indie fiddle act Blazin’ Fiddles, and one of the most celebrated and successful Scottish folk bands of recent times Breabach, who were named ‘Best Group’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2011.

Other acts performing across the weekend includes English folk rock group Coast, Brown Bear & the Bandits whose folk guitar licks, celtic airs and pop hooks with meaningful lyrics, have seen them support Pete Docherty and play to a sold out King Tuts. Ceilidh bands Skipinnish and Gunna Sound will raise the roof and have the whole TMF audience dancing, while Trail West will present their exciting twist on the traditional ‘west coast’ ceilidh band style. Joining the line-up are the Scott Wood Trio, Culann, Lori McTear, The Youth & Young, Room 16, Na hEileanaich, with many more acts to be announced. The Community Village, which is located right beside the festival site and campsite, will once again be a hive of entertainment, activities and music workshops as well as housing all the delicious locally sourced festival food and trade stalls. The brand new Family Campsite will offer a quieter area for those who want to bring their whole brood and will have access to showers. Getting to the gorgeous island is easy with Flybe flying directly from Glasgow, or you can enjoy the train to Oban and then catch one of the regular Caledonian MacBrayne ferries.

Doune The Rabbit Hole Moves to New Home in Stirlingshire Port of Menteith : August 22-25
Doune The Rabbit Hole brings a psychedelic summer to Stirlingshire with a musical line up headlined by cult Liverpool band Clinic, Scottish folk-rock troubadour Alasdair Roberts & Friends and 60s psych heroes July. Glasgow indie legends The Pastels and punk-pop trio PAWS will also join us at Cardross Estate.

Also joining the festival at the new location of Cardross Estate, Port of Mentieth are Orkestra Del Sol who headline an extended Thursday evening bill with Machines In Heaven and Honey & The Herbs. Friday sees headliner Alasdair Roberts & Friends on the main stage, along with The John Langan Band, Meursault and Haight Ashbury. The intimate Fruitstand stage welcomes Rick Redbeard, Steve Adey and Stanley Brinks and the Baino tent is headlined by PAWS as well as featuring Gallon Drunk, Arbouretum, Galoshins and The Cosmic Dead. A guest stage will be curated by Ten Tracks and features bands including Buriers. Saturday’s main stage bill features Clinic, The Pastels, The Monochrome Set, Washington Irving and Panda Su among others. The Fruitstand line up includes Robyn Hitchcock, Rozi Plain and The Wellgreen. The Baino welcomes Zun Zun Egui, Bomskare and Stealing Sheep. A guest stage will be curated by Edinburgh’s poetry and music fusion collective Neu Reekie and will feature among others The Sexual Objects and Teen Canteen. Sunday’s headliner is 60s psych-rock legends July, the main stage also welcomes The Horndog Brass Band, Hidden Masters and Randolph’s Leap among others. The Fruitstand has Rachel Sermanni, The Banana Sessions Jo Mango and Siobhan Wilson, while The Baino’s line up includes Z’s, Bo Ningen and Three Dimensional Tanx. The popular Inspire Stage will run all weekend as well as the Low End Dance Stage – with guests including Rebecca Vasmant and The Line Of Best Fit DJs. Expect a cinema tent, art trail and lots of workshops suitable for the whole family. “We’re thrilled with our new location,” said Jamie Murray, festival director. “Cardross Estate is on the boundary of Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park. It’s a beautiful site which has experience of hosting outdoor events meaning we can make the production better than ever, suffice to say it's a lovely flat, oak and beech-filled pasture!” Doune The Rabbit Hole is a small-scale festival where music, art, spoken word performances, workshops and activities for a family audience are the focus. About Doune the Rabbit Hole CIC Doune The Rabbit Hole is a Community Interest Company run by a few wildly headstrong individuals with a passion for music, art and all things fun! We make people happy though music, art, cake and loads of other stuff! After we've done that we teach people who wouldn't ordinarily be able to how to do creative things, like play instruments, write poetry and paint. And we do it for free! Hooray! Doune the Rabbit Hole CIC is a very, very small company with some great ideas and plans. Our overall mission is to make Scotland HAPPIER! The plan is simple: Doune the Rabbit Hole’s ultimate aim is to ensure there is no financial boundary to children learning creative skills in Scotland. By “creative skills” we mean skills like playing instruments, writing poetry, sculpting and anything else you can think of that might be termed “art”. We’ve noticed that there’s a bit of disparity between wealthy folks – whose kids get to go off and learn how to do all these wonderful, creative and fun things through private tuition – and those who are less well-off whose parents might not be able to afford for their children to be privately educated in all these activities. You might say: But schools teach art and music, why would they need extra education in these areas outside of school? We could answer this with another question: How much of school did you really enjoy? Usually the answer is “Not much” and sadly that is still the case today no matter how much teachers tell you otherwise. Children don’t tend to immediately associate their school with fun and happiness. Everything that occurs in school is labelled dull, boring and uninteresting – which art is not! The classroom environment just isn’t ideal for teaching children creative skills. The Curriculum for Excellence is all well and good and it certainly encourages music and art tuition in schools but it doesn’t seem to work as well as hoped. Kids react much better to a creative education if it occurs outside of the classroom. We’re not just making this up! See this Scottish Government Report on the matter www.scotland.gov. uk/Publications/2010/12/14144908/0 So, what we propose to do is to provide free creative arts education outside school for kids who can’t afford to be privately educated. Another thing it says on the above report is that the more kids are involved in creative and cultural activities (like going to gigs, poetry readings, gallery openings, reading literature etc) the more likely they are to be interested in that kind of thing when they grow up. But why do you see creativity as so important anyway? Being creative makes people happy and we think happiness is a good thing! There are literally hundreds of psychological and scientific papers relating creativity to happiness – here is one to be getting on with: Creativity and Happiness. How will you do this?

We plan to promote affordable, interesting and family friendly events which are free for under 12s to attend so that they can get involved in arts and culture from an early age. Importantly, this does not mean the events are for kids – that would be defeating the point – they are for adults but are child-friendly so that children who attend them feel like adults and are not alienated. The EG&MF is next month so MUSIC NEWS Scotland took a look at what you can get for the basic £10 (£8 conc) Day Ticket, and it's quite a lot actually!!! With the Day Ticket giving you access up until 5.30pm you can visit this year's exhibition featuring a huge range of guitars, gear, amps and more bit’s and bobs than you can think off. As well as this the EG&MF will have guitarists and bands playing throughout the day in many of their performance areas. JAMES and TWIN ATLANTIC to headline Belladrum’s 10th anniversary festival Beauly : 2-3 August
Manchester indie legends James and Glasgow rock prodigies Twin Atlantic have been booked to headline the party to celebrate Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival’s tenth anniversary (Beauly, Inverness-shire; 2 and 3 August ). James’s headline appearance at Bella in 2007 has gone down in history as one of the most celebrated moments at the event, leading to an invitation to the band to make a return visit this year. Formed in 1982, James have racked up more than 25 million sales worldwide from their 12 studio albums with hits such as ‘Come Home’, ‘Sit Down’ and ‘She’s A Star.’ They will close the festival on the Saturday night (3 August) loved Celtic rockers, The Dangleberries; Jericho Hill – three ex-punks and a cowboy playing Johnny Cash; Victorian Trout Conspiracy, great ska from Edinburgh; Scotland’s most tipped unsigned band, Fatherson; local heroes Scooty and the Skyhooks, Brown Bear and the Bandits from Largs. Skerryvore, Feis Rois, Caledonian Ceilidh Trail and Toby Michaels Rolling Damned from the Highlands “We are really delighted to be announcing such a mix of old friends and new talent at Bella for our tenth birthday,” said promoter Joe Gibbs. “It is very rewarding to see Scottish artists like Twin Atlantic progress from unsigned stage to top of the order, but also to see the longevity of many of the acts which come to Bella and have held the affections of the crowd over the years. In that vein, we are particularly please to welcome James back to the headline slot. Twin Atlantic’s story at Bella began with a legendary gig in the goNorth Seedlings stage in 2008 when the show had to be stopped and the rest of the gig was conducted with the enthusiastic audience sitting on the floor! Since then, the band has progressed to becoming one of Scotland’s most acclaimed rock acts with Bella proud to be giving them their first festival headline.
The 2013 theme is ‘Carnival’, in keeping with the birthday party atmosphere the milestone event is bound to create. A video of the 2012 event created by Tom Welsh from Deluxe.com, Edinburgh, can be seen on the event’s web site. Belladrum 2013 takes place in the beautiful Highland surroundings of Belladrum Estate, near Beauly in Inverness-shire. The independent festival has built a reputation for its eclectic line-ups, its offbeat nonmusical entertainments and its all-ages approach. The festival won a VisitScotland Thistle Award in 2009 and is a past winner of the Grassroots Festival Award at the UK Festival Awards, the festival industry’s ‘oscars’.
Besides the headliners, an exciting and wide-ranging list of other acts is announced for the event. Among these, The Straits, consisting of former members of Dire Straits, bring a greatest hits set to Bella, and the British band Noisettes make their first appearance at the festival. Saturday Hothouse Stage headliners are stellar garage rockers The Horrors. King Charles and Scots indie artists Admiral Fallow feature at the event and Rumours of Fleetwood Mac are also booked, together with Celtic rockers Peatbog Faeries who played the first Belladrum Festival way back in 2004 Lucy Spraggan brings her acoustic-folk-hip hop mix to Bella for the first time as does emerging soul artist Jacob Banks, who comes fresh from touring with Emile Sande. Scots folk star Dougie MacLean will headline the Black Isle Brewery Grassroots Stage, supported by folk legend Martin Carthy. Gavin James, an impressive young singer-songwriter from Ireland and Rick Redbeard of the Phantom Band in singer-songwriter mode are joined on the Black Isle Grassroots stage by the pagan pop-folk all-girl trio Stealing Sheep and the gentle Geordie jazzy swingy country troupe of Shipcote and Friends It’s A Beautiful Day, created during San Francisco’s 1967 ‘Summer of Love’ will also feature, together with: folk rockers Treetop Flyers who won Glastonbury’s 2011 emerging talent competition; Scotland’s much

Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival
Edinburgh April 24 - May 6 Tradfest celebrates the arts of tradition at local, national and international contexts, combining authentic cultural sources with contemporary edge and flair. It will include song, story, arts and crafts, music, folk drama and dance, along with their interconnections, embracing Scots and Gaelic, and the arts of Scotland's diverse communities in top venues across Edinburgh including Queen's Hall, Usher Hall, Dance Base, the Scottish Storytelling Centre, Teviot Row House, Calton Hill and Arthur's Seat. Tradfest is organised by TRACS (Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland) from its base at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, which brings together the Scottish Storytelling Forum, the Traditional Music Forum and the Traditions of Dance Forum to underpin collaboration and shared development for the future between the trad arts, in the context of new social settings and technologies. By encompassing Beltane/Mayday, with their seasonal rituals, Tradfest will be a curtain raiser for the unrivalled wave of Fèisean and Festivals that breaks over Scotland from that weekend through the summer months.
Oban May 2-5 The Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival has developed into one of Scotland’s major arts festivals, and takes place annually in Oban. The festival began in 1984, when its aims were to encourage young talent to participate in and develop the traditional arts of music and dance of the highlands and islands of Scotland. Since then the event has developed to include new special events and competitions, and the festival now offers over 1100 participants 125 competition classes in twelve disciplines including piping, accordion, fiddle, clarsach, piano, recorder, woodwind & brass, singing, Scottish country dancing, highland dancing and choreography. www.obanfestival.org

Founded in 1977 by Orkney's distinguished resident composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, the Festival has grown from small beginnings into one of Britain's most highly regarded and adventurous arts events.
