‘No reason to go back’: Paul Stanley says Kiss will never tour again unmasked

Paul Stanley says fans shouldn’t expect another unmasked tour from Kiss any time soon. The band went without makeup from 1983-1996, and has never looked back, he says.

“What we do is so unique,” Stanley said, during a Q&A on this month’s Kiss Kruise. “Once we put the makeup back on, and we reclaimed what we started as — and what we always believed in — there was no reason to go back.”

Kiss debuted with its unique set of costumed characters in March 1973, appearing for the first time without makeup on September 18, 1983 on MTV to promote their new album Lick It Up. All four original members then reemerged back in costume on February 28, 1996 during the Grammy Awards.

The group has since replaced both Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, but continues forward with Kiss’ iconic original makeup.

The only times Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer play unmasked are during informal backstage shows, at individual special appearances, and on this annual on-ship concert event for fans.

“It’s great to get a chance to play for you without the makeup,” Stanley said of the Kiss Kruise. “But we’re so proud of what we’ve accomplished, and we’re so proud to continue on doing what we do. I don’t have any qualms about saying: Nobody does it better. So why jump to another horse? We’re real happy being Kiss.”
