Biography

  • Asgeir Trausti Einarsson (born July 1st, 1992), better known simply as Asgeir, is an Icelandic singer-songwriter, born in Laugarbakki and based in the capital of Reykjavik.

Einarsson might not have been around for all that long, but there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that he’s the next in succession in a long line of intelligent and complex musicians to hail from Iceland. In keeping with the likes of Bjork and Sigur Ros, who also hail from Einarsson’s homeland, his music - best described as a melodic form of folk - focuses primarily on subtlety, nuance and cleverness of construction; his career only began in earnest in 2012, but he quickly made a name for himself as one of the most exciting prospective talents of his generation. Einarsson played guitar in a band by the name of The Lovely Lion, but has found more success by standing on his own two feet.

He took the Icelandic charts by storm in 2012 with his debut album, ‘Dýrð í dauðaþögn’, topping both the albums charts and singles charts - the latter with ‘Hvitir skor’ - for several weeks at a time. He released an English translation of the album in late 2013, with assistance from the revered American singer-songwriter John Grant, one of Einarsson’s early champions. He’s gone on to release a couple of music videos from the English version of the album, including ‘Torrent’ and ‘King and Cross’.

  • Ásgeir

Ásgeir - if you can pronounce his name correctly, you are already on your way to being a big fan of this soulful artist. Already a big thing in his native country of Iceland, Ásgeir is on his way to world domination with a relentless tour that is spanning the globe throughout 2014 & early 2015. This was my second time seeing Ásgeir this year. His June concert at Black Cat sold out and was one of my favorites for the year. Last night's show was no exception. Instead of opening with one of his tunes in his native tongue as he did this summer (he saved that for the second song), he started off with "Head in the Snow" - one of my personal favorites. Not only do his songs have impeccable, peaceful musicality, but the lyrics also convey such beautiful poetry and purity of spirit. His songs run a gamut of atmospheric electronica, in the vein of Bon Iver, to a rolling, old school country-folk, traveling troubadour vibe. His live show is fun to watch - and it was even more fun noticing how Ásgeir has relaxed a bit on stage, interacting and smiling a little bit more than when he was here in June. But don't expect him to be chit-chatty - he and his band are there to share their art, and partaking in it is such a pleasure. The live set switches back and forth between English and Icelandic, but not to worry - the tunes are the same with each, so even if you don't understand the Icelandic, you'll enjoy the familiarity of the song (assuming you're familiar with his catalog before going to see him). One of my favorite moments of the show was when he came back to play two songs for an encore, and the first song was just him and his guitar ("On That Day") and then the full band came out to close with "Torrent". It highlighted the dimension this artist has. I for one am excited to keep following along his career and see what next steps he takes as an artist. And I can't wait till he gets back here to see him live again!

  • A really interesting gig, I wish I had seen Asgeir on his first tour too (from the first album) to see how different it was. Even before deciding to go, I was aware the second album was carrying different vibes/influences, I'd say, maybe more electro ? Saturated sounds, when the first sounds more acoustic based to a humble amateur like me.

I really enjoyed it, and the friend I was bringing who didn't know (it was a surprise) who was playing, even more so.

Surprising -but not really, seeing the kind of music they're playing- how Asgeir and his band were shy and not really talkative with the audience. It did remind me a bit of my friends from Isaac Delusion before they did some "special" preparation for staging. Changed a lot for them. Presence wise.

The scenography was amazingly thought, maybe a bit too bright and rhythm based but the ray tubes were a brilliant idea of spreading light, giving some sort of 'icelandic' touch to the stage...

Overall really thrilling to finally see him on stage ! Lovely vibe. I would love to hear him again, maybe this time, in a smaller venue, for a more acoustic gig.

    Thanks !

  • Sparkle of sounds and heavenly voice... It was just amazing to be a part of such wonderful music. Yes, you can be a part of Asgeir's music. There were no interval between each song, which means you can just give yourself into the flow of music. Dramatic drum beats, bright flash of light, delicate sounds of keyboards and soft voice...the world was filled with emotions and colours. You can never experience such a thing in other places! His very sincere and serious attitude towards music is also very impressive, and it enable us to concentrate on his music. Most of the songs were sung in Icelandic, but it echoed clearly and the noise caused by a mike or other instruments was minimum. Also, the lighting was breathtaking. If you have never been to his concert, I strongly recommend to go and experience his music directly. It definitely gives you different impressions and you will feel new inspiration springs inside of you. As in his lyrics, 'let's the tide set us free'

  • First of all, to all those who intelligently chose to attend the concert; can we just take a moment appreciate the Icelandic beards? ... did you take the moment? Brilliant! Now, let's get to the point. They started off their concert by dramatically singing a traditional Icelandic song; an introduction to a performance has never felt so right. Being new artists to the scene of music, they did tremendously well at choosing how to display their playlist. They sung some songs in Icelandic and others in English; it was a bold move, but a brilliant one. Each band member was so incredibly immersed in each and every song. Not only that, they were also so humble and grateful for their widespread fan base in Australia. All I have to say is, if you're looking for an incredibly heartfelt performance, filled with genuine talent, Asgeir are the guys to see.

  • I am shocked that this show was not sold out. Asgeir 's first album is wonderful and I find his Icelandic accent charming. In concert, he may not have all the mannerisms down pat, but I love his voice and it sounded great live. He saved King and Cross and Torrents for the end of the show as well as his fine cover of Heart Shaped Box. I would really like to see Asgeir 's popularity extend beyond Iceland and throughout the US. Low Roar, the opener, was also very good...In a trance - like sort of way.

  • I love listening to Asegir, but it is a very different experience to listen to him live. If you're looking for an interactive concert where the artist chats with the audience, this isn't the concert for you. Was disappointed after being such a big fan for so many years, that we weren't even with a 'hello Berlin, it is good to be here'

    Perhaps it is Icelandic shyness...

  • This concert was absolutely incredible! Would HIGHLY recommend seeing Asgeir live. They did a great job of keeping the electronic feel while having musicians on stage and keeping it 'live'. And of course Asgeir's voice was beyond beautiful. On top of all that, this venue was really small and intimate - a very cool experience.

  • A dreamy, beautiful concert with many textured layers. He uses the vocoder a bit which adds a lot. Sings all the best songs both new and old, including King and Cross and Going Home. He came out to the lobby after for signatures and photos too! Overall an excellent experience.

  • Amazing vokals and sound... Asgeirs connection with the audience was basically non existent tho... nice visual show and good warm up bands. All in all a good experience, but Asgeir could try to connect a bit more with the audience
