Environment Canada is warning people in Southern Ontario of a potential ice storm Wednesday morning.

An official freezing rain warning issued Tuesday notes a low-pressure area developing in Colorado is expected to travel across the Great Lakes and bring freezing rain early Wednesday morning to Southwestern Ontario, spreading north and east through the morning.

The Environment Canada warning says the freezing rain will likely persist for a few hours before changing to rain later in the morning or early in the afternoon.

"Ice accumulation is possible In some locales," it adds.

"Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas."

Freezing Rain Warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.
