Nokia N900 Maemo ‘switch on & test’ videos

We published this afternoon’s ‘first impression’ videos featuring the Nokia N900 Maemo device on Mobile Developer TV exclusively — that’s where we invariably publish our videos first, so if you’d like to be notified immediately, do follow @mobdevtv (or sign-up to email updates on the site).

Here for ease of viewing are the two first impression videos.

Now, I received the N900 this morning and 10 minutes later, I had the video camera out recording my first experiences. This means that you’re getting completely unfiltered reaction. Although I’ve seen the device before at Nokia World, I didn’t manage to play with it for any length of time — so what you’ll see in these videos is me learning how it works.

Both vids are roughly 9 minutes long. Have a look:

  1. I dropped my n97 down the toilet the other day (not in anger with it!) I would love to upgrade to the N900. does anyone know if maemo 6 will come out on the n900 ?

  2. Ok, I am going to be a pedantic AH and point out that it was Nokia 770, not N770….. 😉 I can only do that because I too have one, sitting right there on top of our fridge… Gosh, I have to say I am VERY impressed too by how fast e.g. browsing is over 3G!

Do post an update once you figure out how to increase volume when browsing and playing a video. Perhaps its somewhere in that toolbar that shows up at the bottom when you click on the icon at the bottom right corner? Or a shortcut on the qwerty?

  3. It wont be officially supported but probably will be ported over unofficially, however as it will be missing some hardware features (prob magnetic compass/multitouch(capacitive)) not everything on it will be 100% compatible. Maemo 6 isnt coming out for at least a year – rather a long time to hold off!

  4. I'm wondering whether to wait too see if an N920 is just around the corner. I'm being cautious as I don't want a repeat of what happened with the n97 where the mini came only after a few of months fixing all the originals bugs and hardware issues

  5. Was the flash video slow because of the hardware or the software? Or was it because of the floating toolbar at the bottom of your website? Could you try the video while minimizing the toolbar and say if it's as fast as a normal PC?

Too many Qs but I hope you can answer them!
