Collection Title: Urban Transformation

Tell us a bit more about your “URBAN LUXE” collection. What inspired you?

My Urban Transformation collection is inspired by minimalism and the need to transform. In this modern day more young women partake in the urban working world. The clothing of these woman needs to be able to adapt to their busy working and social lives. The patterns and colours used in the collection are inspired by the urban landscape within which these powerful women work and live.

If you had to match a song to your collection, what would it be and why?

Something Good by Alt J. I know this might sound cheesy but, I believe that what I am striving to achieve with my sustainable collection is something good. This song inspires happiness and creativity, just like I hope my collection will too. It is also just a flipping good song!

What challenges have you experienced by adhering to the competition principles of using sustainable design techniques?

I have experience with altering garments as growing up I did not like wearing clothes that were the same as everyone else, I have very few garments that are in their original condition. This is what started my journey into fashion. However, this competition challenged me to think further into completely reconstructing a garment, altering its original use. It also stretched my creativity to design transformable garments to build upon the sustainable principles.

What does sustainable fashion mean to you?

Sustainable fashion isn’t a fashion fad. It can form a canvas to be built on with the latest fashion fads to stay on trend. It is fashion that can sustain many years and it suits any figure. It is sustainable for the earth too as fewer of these garments would need to be produced as consumers wouldn’t need to purchase as many garments for the reason stated above.

I can’t start my day without…

A good cup of coffee and Instagram!

You are currently obsessed with?

Well, I am always obsessed with purple… But lately I love cross-stitching! I struggle to just sit and watch TV without doing something at the same time and so now I cross-stitch cards, jewellery, well pretty much anything.

3 things we don’t know about you…

I have exhibited collections in 3 fashion shows
I am a qualified magician
I love putting a vintage twist on a modern outfit

What’s on your horizon?

I will soon be purchasing some vinyl printing equipment to print designs in interesting ways onto my natural fibre garments to then sell at local markets under my label Lila-Rose by Hannah-Rose.

What is your most treasured piece in your wardrobe?

Without a doubt a pair of maroon suede vintage heels. They are one of a kind and fit like a glove, it’s like they were made for me. I love that they also have a story behind them as they are vintage.

Top tip when it comes to sustainable design…

Think carefully when purchasing a garment. Think about how versatile it is, the quality and whether or not the style is timeless. If the garment is able to be dressed up or down, will last many years and has a timeless style, then I believe you have a sustainable design piece. It is even better if the garment makes use of natural or recycled fibres.

The Remake Design Challenge is proudly brought to you by Pick n Pay in partnership with The Cape Town Fashion Council.
