Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brendan Bittner

Hawks Drop Heartbreaker To Lindenwood, 74-73

QUINCY, Ill. – For the third straight time against an NCAA Division II opponent the Quincy University men's basketball team played a game that came down to the final possession, but the Hawks came out on the losing end, 74-73, to Lindenwood at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Nov. 22) afternoon.

Junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Illinois Central) buried a quick-fire 3-pointer with 1:13 to go that tied the game at 71-71. Sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) then got a steal and raced to the other end where redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) was fouled.

McGaughey sank both free throws with 29.3 seconds left, but the Lions struck back with a deep 3-pointer by Chase Creekmur on the next possession to take a 74-73 lead.

The Hawks then called a timeout at half-court with 10.6 seconds remaining. Junior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) drove and had the ball knocked away on the baseline to give it back to Quincy. The Hawks inbounded deep to McGaughey, who drove, turned and fired a 15-footer, but Creekmur got a finger on it and the ball fell short of the rim.

Quincy (2-2) played an uphill battle from the start with the Lions (2-2) opening the game on a 19-6 run over the first eight minutes. The visitors built their lead to as many as 17 points in the first half, but Quincy closed on a 14-5 run to trail just 38-30 at halftime.

The game was tied five times in the second half as the Hawks could never get over the hump. Eneogwe's tip-in with nine minutes left tied the game at 59-59, but Lindenwood's Sam Mader responded with a layup on the other end. Mader finished with 14 points (7-for-9) to lead the Lions.

Eneogwe's 3-pointer off a feed from Jackson with 7:29 left tied the game at 62-62, but the Hawks stayed on that number for more than three minutes, missing on four straight possessions.

Senor's layup with 4:01 left snapped that scoreless string and cut the deficit to 65-64 as the Lions were not able to take advantage of the Hawks' offensive struggles.

Mader stretched the lead to 67-64, but redshirt-sophomore forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) made a layup on the other end to cut it to one.

Senor sank a couple free throws with 1:52 remaining to make it 69-68 to Lindenwood before Mader again made it a three-point game before Eneogwe's 3-pointer.

Senor and junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) led the Hawks with 14 points each while Jackson added 12 and Eneogwe 10. Bruxvoort had eight points and six boards in his first game action of the season. McGaughey (four) and Hoover (three) combined for seven blocks as Quincy swatted a season-high eight shots.

The Hawks shot 46.7 percent (28-for-60) from the field while the Lions hit on 45.9 percent (28-for-61). Lindenwood separated itself with 10 3-pointers and on the glass, carrying a 40-31 advantage.

The Hawks will return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 25) in Kansas City as they take on defending national champion Central Missouri at the Sprint Center. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. Admission to the game is free.
