Despite Friday’s strong winds and cool temperatures, this year’s Barrington Relay for Life teams raised plenty of awareness and over $100,000 to help The American Cancer Society save lives. Barrington’s Relay kicked off with Zumba, Frisbee, live music, silent auctions and games before the overnight camp-out at Barrington High School.
To get a feel for the tremendous local impact Relay for Life has in Barrington, 365BarringtonTV reporter Tommy Derken made his way to the Carter Strong table. That’s where he talked with Jim Bailey, father of cancer survivor and 2014 BHS graduate Carter Bailey about the support they’ve received since Carter’s leukemia diagnosis and bone marrow transplant last year.
The Baileys were at Relay to support the cause, thank the community and spread awareness about Be the Match, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects blood cancer patients with their donor match for a life-saving marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. Tommy Derken shares this update about the Bailey family’s journey.
In addition to the fun activities for families, highlights of this year’s Relay included the annual “Survivors’ Walk” and Luminaria ceremonies to remember and support those impacted by cancer.
