Wheeling Jesuit Rugby Wallops WVU Rugby 24-5

Wheeling, WVa. -  The Wheeling Jesuit Rugby team turned in a dominating performance and got their second win of the season with a 24-5 victory over the West Virginia University Mountaineers.

Collegiate All-American Peter Malcolm scored two tries on the day to lead WJU.    Malcolm, a junior loose forward, scored his first try off a drive maul where he picked up the ball, powered through three defenders, and scored in the corner.

On his second try, Malcolm broke from 40 meters out through multiple defenders before a dash to the corner where he evaded one more defender to dot down under the post.

Junior lock Zachery Reichenbach got WJU off to a good start. About twenty minutes into the game, Reichenbach let loose on a 60 meter break and offloaded the ball to fellow teammate Peter Malcolm.  Malcolm took it down to the 10 meter line, got tackled, and a penalty was called.  Freshman high school All-American Cecil Rich bulldozed to within inches of the goal line.  Reichenbach noticed a lazy defense, picked the ball, and dove over for the Cardinal's first try of the day.

WJU reversed the field and moved the ball through multiple players' hands to put away Ryan Graggs scoring try from 15 meters out.  Graggs, a freshman wing, had a stand out day in his first start with exciting open field runs and hard-nosed play on the defensive side of the ball.

Rounding out the scoring on the day was junior outside center Brandon Stine.  Stine successfully kicked two conversions bringing WJU's point total to 24.

The win avenged WJU's narrow defeat to WVU a year ago, brings WJU Rugby's record to 2-1 on the season, and further fueled the inter-state Rugby rivalry between the two squads.

On the B-side, Wheeling Jesuit also defeated the Mountaineers, 31-13.

Wheeling Jesuit Rugby returns to action next Sunday September 21st at home against Iona College for a 12 noon match on Bishop Schmitt Field.
