New speaker series for men at J

Evelyn Rubenstein JCC of Houston is launching a new monthly lunch and speaker series for men, under the leadership of Daniel Melmed from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. The program starts Thursday, March 12, at noon with speaker, Chris Bronk, Ph.D., who will discuss Internet security and the cyberwar taking place between Israel, United States and Iran.

The J already has a thriving Adults 60-plus program, which continues to grow as the J tries to keep up with the need of this growing age group. All programs are diverse in nature, from lifelong learning courses to art classes and from Shabbat dinner to book club. All the programs share a common goal, which is to enhance life within the Jewish community, whether it is through physical activity or intellectual productivity.

“This new initiative is designed just for men as a way to cultivate social engagement, cultural enrichment and intellectual growth” said Melmed.

Dr. Bronk has extensive experience across policy analysis, software development, information technology security and energy issues. After managing the technical staff of an online startup through acquisition in the 1990s, Dr. Bronk served as a Foreign Service Officer and later as a senior advisor with the U.S. State Department, where he produced enterprise architecture strategy for items including information assurance, open-source software adoption, vendor selection, crowd-sourcing and migration to cloud-based computing. Dr. Bronk is an assistant professor of Computer and Information Systems at the University of Houston and adjunct professor of Computer Science at Rice University. His research is on the intersection between IT, business, regulation, public policy and foreign affairs.

The speaker series for men will take place monthly. The next scheduled speaker luncheon will be April 23, with Randy Czarlinsky, Houston Region director for the American Jewish Committee.

All programs begin at noon at the JCC. Register for this event by contacting Esther Bethke at 713-595-8186. To learn more about adult programs at the J, visit erjcchouston.org/adultsonthego; also, on
