Discussion: Black Liberation and the Paradox of Political Engagement

Frank Wilderson III, will discuss “Black Liberation and the Paradox of Political Engagement,” with our audience. Raised in Minneapolis, Frank earned his BA at Dartmouth, an MFA at Columbia University, and a PhD at the University of California at Berkeley. In the 1990s he lived and taught in South Africa, where he also joined the Umkhonto We Sizwe wing of the African National Congress. He has worked on theatrical productions at famed Market Theater in Johannesburg, as well as in New York and California, and he has made films, won poetry and short story awards, written widely read books (his memoir INCOGENGRO: A MEMOIR OF EXILE & APARTHEID has received considerable critical acclaim), and been a successful teacher (Professor of Drama at the University of California at Irvine) and public intellectual. Dr. Wilderson’s contributions to the school of thought known as “afro-pessimism” have been widely cited, and his presentation will give us an opportunity to engage this school of thought in person.
