Canadian Football League wide receiver Duron Carter, son of Hall of Fame receiver Cris Carter, is expected to sign a contract with the Indianapolis Colts, a source said Tuesday.

Carter is a standout with the Montreal Alouettes who starred the past two seasons, posting a combined 1,939 receiving yards.

No announcement of an official signing is expected immediately, though Carter could conceivably sign before Feb. 10, when players with expiring CFL contracts are technically allowed to sign NFL deals.

Alouettes general manager Jim Popp told The Indianapolis Staron Tuesday that he expressed to Carter a willingness to release him from his CFL contract if and when he agreed to terms with an NFL club. That would allow Carter to become a free agent and sign a deal whenever he wishes.

Carter had been in talks with the Colts and Minnesota Vikings -- the latter is his father's former team -- but was drawn to Indianapolis largely by the presence of Pro Bowl quarterback Andrew Luck.

Numerous academic and other issues continuously interrupted Carter's college career, during which he bounced among several schools, including Ohio State and Alabama. He went undrafted in 2013 but opted for Canada.

Wide receiver is an area of need for the Colts, who could be without Reggie Wayne and Hakeem Nicks in 2015. Wayne is considering retirement and Nicks' one-year contract is expiring.

At 6-5 and nearly 210 pounds, Carter could give the Colts another big-bodied receiver, joining 6-2, 221-pound Donte Moncrief.
