Reading by third grade: Impacts of early education extend beyond classroom

In Michigan, about two in five third-grade students didn’t test as proficient in reading in 2013. Research shows that achievement gaps present by third grade only widen as students grow up — making the early years of school the most important ones.

But not making the grade on a third grade test can have greater implications far beyond the classroom.

Without the proper interventions at a young age, students are less prepared to cope with the demands of school and young adulthood.

Hope College graduation speakers announced

More than 700 seniors will be graduating May 3 from Hope College at Ray and Sue Smith Stadium in Holland.

For the 150th Commencement ceremony at the stadium, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Athletics Co-Director Tim Schoonveld will be the featured speaker.

Schoonveld, who has been on the college’s faculty for the past six years, is a Hope College graduate and has coached junior varsity basketball at Hope and teams at Holland Christian High School.

Holland Christian students pen letters of support for Holland Museum

Fourth-grade students from two Holland Christian schools have a mission: save the Holland Museum.

Thirty-four students from Rose Park and Pine Ridge Christian schools have penned letters of support for the museum, submitting them to the city of Holland and to museum staff.

The effort is part of the students’ writing and Social Studies curriculum this spring, thanks to their teachers Ellen Jacobs and Katie DeVos.
