Baseball Drops 8-7 Heartbreaker at #11 Miami

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team was one out away from its second win over a ranked team in as many weekends, but a Garrett Kennedy two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth allowed #11 Miami to escape with an 8-7 win Friday night at Mark Light Field.

The Raiders took the early lead with three runs in the second.  A pair of fielding errors put runners on the corners with one out and Mitch Roman followed with a single to center to plate the first run.  After Jason DeFevers had a hit to right, Mark Fowler drove in two more with a hit to left.

Miami answered right back with two in its half of the second before WSU tacked on a run in the third as Ryan Fucci led off with a solo home run to right, his third of the season.

The Hurricanes tallied a run in the third to make it 4-3, only to see Wright State expand the margin with three runs in the fourth.  With two out and no one on base, Fowler started the rally by reaching on an infield single.  After Michael Timm reached on an error and Andrew McCafferty walked to load the bases, Fucci cleared them with a double down the left field line.

Miami scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh, but the Raiders still led by a run heading into the bottom of the ninth.  It looked promising for WSU as the first batter struck out and, despite the second reaching on a hit, the pinch-runner was thrown out stealing for the second out.

Edgar Michelangeli, however, kept the Hurricanes alive with a walk and Kennedy ended it with a two-run blast to right, his first of the year.

Fowler finished with four hits to pace the Raider offense while Fucci had three to go with his four RBI.

Wright State (4-3) and Miami (7-3) continue the three-game series with another game Saturday at 7:00.
