Game Recap: Softball | | Tom Zulewski

Softball Edged by Berks in the NEAC Championship Game, 5-4

Reading, Pa.- After crushing Keuka College 18-3 earlier in the day Sunday  to advance to the title game, the Penn State Abington softball team fell just short against Penn State Berks, as they lost 5-4.

Sheila O'Hagan (Willow Grove, Pa.) had an absolutely monstrous game for Abington against Keuka. O'Hagan opened up the scoring for Abington in the top of the first with a grand slam to left field for the 4-0 lead.

O'Hagan would then collect an RBI's in the top half of the second, third, and fifth innings. Overall, she finished the game 3-for-3 with 7 RBI's and two homeruns.

Whitney DeLagol (Warminster, Pa.) was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI's and a homerun.

Abington pounded Keuka with 15 hits, but they did receive some help as the Wolfpack committed six errors.

Emily Wrenn (Hatboro, Pa.) picked up her ninth win of the season. She scattered six hits over 4.0 innings of work.

In the title game against Berks, Abington would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. That was short lived as Berks responded with four runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 4-1 lead.

Abington would cut Berks' lead to 4-2 as DeLagol scored on a wild pitch, but Berks' once again responded in bottom of third inning to extend their lead to 5-2.

Abington would make the game very interesting in the top half of the fifth inning. After Ashley Quenzer (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled to lead off the inning, Bianca Monterosso doubled scoring Quenzer to cut Berks' lead to 5-3.

Danielle Jones would single and she advanced to second base on an error by the right fielder, which scored Monterosso to narrow Berks' lead to 5-4.

Abington couldn't muster any offense in the sixth or seventh innings, as Berks escaped with their third straight NEAC championship.

Abington finishes the year 22-15-1.
