12-year-old girl killed during weekend youth hunt on Drummond Island

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office responded to a 12-year-old hit and killed when a rifle discharged over the weekend.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI – A 12-year-old was killed this weekend when a gun discharged in the vehicle where she was riding.

The incident happened late Sunday morning during the weekend youth hunt in a vehicle traveling along Glen Cove Road on Drummond Island, according to the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office.

The girl was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle, occupied by two adults and another child, when a hunting rifle discharged and fatally shot her, police said.

The incident is still under investigation and the child’s name has not yet been released.
