WILLIAMSBURG, MI — An Oakland County woman died this weekend in a traffic crash on an icy highway in Northern Michigan.

Joan Cavanaugh, 81, of Bloomfield Hills, died in the crash on M-72 a mile west of Williamsburg Road in Whitewater Township about 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10.

Grand Traverse County deputies said Cavanaugh was the front seat passenger in a westbound Chevy Tracker SUV driven by her husband, which crossed the centerline of M-72 and struck an oncoming Ford Five Hundred sedan.

Donald Cavanaugh, 82, was driving the Tracker. Angela Cram, 26, of Rapid City, was driving the Ford. Deputies did not say whether the two drivers were injured.

Everyone involved was wearing seatbelts, deputies said. Alcohol was not deemed a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
