Soccer Ties School Mark With 12th Win

Box Score Two early goals guided Wabash soccer to a 2-1 win at Wittenberg and a tie for the most wins in school history with the squad's 12th victory of the season.

The Little Giants won 12 matches in 1990 before matching the feat again in 1996. Twelve proved to be a special number Tuesday for Wabash. The Little Giants moved up four spots to 12th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association rankings announced prior to their win at Wittenberg.

Wabash took little time in producing the first goal of the match. Sixty second into play, freshman Mike Gore dribbled through the Tiger defense and drilled a shot for his fourth goal of the season. He shares the team lead in goals scored with fellow freshman Francisco Trejo.

Riley Pelton gave Wabash a 2-0 lead at 5:35 into the contest when he took a pass from Ivaylo Mantchev from midfield to score his third goal of the year.

"Our starting group came out very strong and got those two early goals," Head Coach Chris Keller said. "I think we let our foot off the gas, which was unfortunate because after the second goal we really didn't play very well. However, we pick up an important road win against a very solid Wittenberg team."

The Little Giants appeared to have added a third goal on two different occasions. An offside call made just as a the ball sailed into the goal called back one opportunity, while a last-second flick by Wittenberg defender Patrick Szymczak kept another Wabash shot seconds before the attempt found its mark.

Wittenberg (5-9-1, 0-6 NCAC) cut the Little Giants' lead to one goal early in the second half on a penalty kick by John Long.

Wabash held a two-shot advantage overall in the match and edged the Tigers by one, 9-8, in shots on goal. Dayton Jennings recorded seven saves to earn the victory.

The Little Giants (12-1-2, 5-1) moved into second place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings after Kenyon and Ohio Wesleyan played to a scoreless draw earlier in the day. Wabash trails Ohio Wesleyan by a half game. The Little Giants hold the same half-game edge over Kenyon. Wabash will face Denison (7-6-1, 4-2 NCAC) Saturday at 1 p.m. in Granville, Ohio.
