UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- John Carroll University has received a $6 million gift from alumnus Timothy Donahue and his wife, Jayne.

Their contribution is one of the largest gifts to date to the Forever Carroll Campaign.

The gift from the couple, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, will provide scholarships to current and future low-income John Carroll students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to service. Recipients of the financial aid award will be known as "Donahue Scholars."

Timothy Donahue earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from John Carroll in 1971.

Donahue was executive chairman of Sprint Nextel Corporation from August 2005 until December 2006. He began his career with Nextel in January 1996 as president and chief operating officer. Before joining Nextel, Donahue served as a regional president for AT&T Wireless Services.

In 2003, John Carroll's 60-acre campus became wireless following a $1.2 million gift from the Donahues in partnership with Nextel.

"Jayne and I believe that education is the single, most important gift we can give to anyone," Donahue said in a statement. "Providing help and support for kids who truly want to learn is a passion of ours."
