EDITOR

With five weeks of summer left to go, it's a little hard to start thinking about first day photos and packing lunches again. Yes, I intend to savor the last sweet days of freedom, but I also plan to be ready for the bell to ring in September. There's always excitement in our house when back to school season begins. It's a time of fresh starts and clean slates. The possibilities of a sharpened pencil, crisp notebook and new backpack are endless. I think if you give your kids the right tools, you're helping them get ahead. And let's not overlook the power of a first-day outfit that makes your child feel proud and shows off his or her style. We're here to help navigate all the choices and make the best selections for your family. Here's to an A+ year!

Nicole As a child I loved back to school shopping. Yes, I definitely liked visiting the mall to pick up some new clothes, but the excitement was bigger than that. I genuinely enjoyed the anticipation of starting a new school year and turning the page on a new chapter. As a parent back to school season is very exciting and overwhelming, but in a whole new way. Endless paperwork, long supply lists, expensive new clothes… it’s a lot to think about. I hope this year’s Back to School Guide offers some inspiration - whether a new lunch idea or cute backpack find - to make your family’s school year transition a little more fun to free up time and energy to capture the real excitement of back to school season. We hope you (and your kids) have a great year!

Back-to-School Shoe Shopping Tips New school year, new cool kicks… Help your kid step into the season (and the classroom!) with style, confidence, and comfortable shoes. Stride Rite has shared five tips to ensure your active little learners get the right fit for their growing feet.

TIP 1: Shoe shopping should always be done later in the afternoon or early evening, since feet swell over the course of the day. TIP 2: Sure, kids outgrow shoes quickly. As parents, it can be tempting to buy our kids big shoes they can grow into. But shoes that are too large can cause a child to trip or even develop foot problems. TIP 3: Switch between at least two pairs of shoes to avoid wear and tear and maintain optimal support. This will help ensure that your child’s shoes last longer. TIP 4: As adults, we often say that we’re “breaking in” a pair of shoes. But shoes should be comfortable from day one—especially for children. Make sure your kids’ shoes fit well and feel good right away. TIP 5: Hand-me-down shoes might save money, but they’re not good for your child’s feet. Old shoes lose support from wear-and-tear and sharing pairs can also spread foot and nail fungus. It’s best to start off each season with a new pair of comfortable shoes in the right size.

Stride Rite has been a step ahead of kids since 1919. We're all too familiar with kids’ affinity for mud, rookie grasp of gravity and their insatiable desire for dressing up like maniacs. So Stride Rite shoes aren't just stylish, they're designed to be up to the task of being worn by kids - and easy on parents.

backpacks A cool backpack is a great way to show off your child’s personality, but it also has a big job to do. We expect our packs to last for years and these are up to the test.

Matilda Jane is a unique, “unpredictable clothing company,” known for colorful mixed prints, layers and ruffles, and the brand is sold through independent personal stylists called Trunk Keepers. Shopping Tip: size matters. An ergonomic backpack should be no larger than your child’s back. Measure shoulder to waist and shoulder blade to shoulder blade to find the perfect fit. Pottery Barn Kids (right) and Lands’ End (above) offer a good size variety.

Back to School, Back to Sleep

It has been an epically awesome two months. You and the kids have been to the beach, gone on vacation, eaten lots of ice cream, and enjoyed every waking moment soaking up the sun, fun, and great outdoors. Suffice to say, you’ve seized the summer. But, alas, it’s time to go back to school. Need a little help returning to reality? The first step to reestablishing a routine is bringing back bedtime. Does it sound like a battle waiting to happen? Fret not, Mom—we’ve got a few great sleepy-time tips from Pete Bils (@SleepGeekPete) and the experts at Sleep Number. 1. Curb bedtime stalling by telling your kids what to expect at bedtime and getting into a routine. 2. Are kids using devices before bed? The lights from screens interfere with production of sleepregulating hormones. Encourage your kids to turn off screens an hour before bedtime to “Stop the Stall” for a better night’s sleep. 3. Help comfort your restless child with a Sleep IQ Kids bed that adjusts and grows with them. 4. Stuffy nose? The Sleep IQ Kids bed tilts to lift your child up when he or she is feeling down. 5. Keep your kids on a regular sleep schedule, even on the weekends. Try not to deviate more than an hour. Maintaining a consistent routine will tell your kid’s mind and body that it’s time to unwind. 6. Bedtime activities should be calm, quiet, and in dim light. Try reading your kid’s favorite book. 7. Heavy meals too close to bedtime may interfere with sleep. Stop the stall with a light snack before bedtime instead. Have your kids avoid caffeinated drinks after noon. Caffeine can last for hours after consumption. 8. If your kids exercise too late, they’ll stimulate their heart, brain and muscles, making it harder to fall asleep. Regular sports practices & activities promote better sleep, but avoid rigorous activities within four hours of bedtime. Less activity before bed means better sleep for them— and better mornings for you!

Get out your combs, elastic bands, and bobby pins—it’s time to get braiding! Give your daughter a beautiful “do” on the first day of school. The pros at Milk & Cookies Kids Spa and Salon in NYC have shared a stress-free tress tutorial for your hairstyling pleasure. This flower braid is relatively simple and absolutely adorable. Your little lady will love it! Step 1: Section hair across top of ear from one side to the other. Step 2: Section hair down the middle. Step 3: Start on the left side of the head—you have to get your hand positioning right: Hold two strands in one hand, and the third strand in the other. Begin with a traditional braid by crossing the right strand over to the center. Then, cross the left strand over to the center and continue this motion until you all the way down the hair section. Step 4: Go to other side and repeat step three. Step 5: You should now have two braids. Now, take one of the braids and roll it towards the hair until you have the hair in the circle and secure with French hair pins. Step 6. Repeat step 5. Step 7: Spray with hair glitter! (Optional.)

Going to the orthodontist can be scary. But WildSmiles is transforming the experience and making it exciting for kids and parents alike. It’s the first and only proven corrective appliance that allows patients to design their own custom smiles. Children are empowered to express themselves creatively by choosing the style of brackets they want—from stars to hearts to footballs and flowers. We chatted with Dr. Clarke Stevens, a professional leader in the dental industry, about what makes WildSmiles so unique, special and, yes, fun! (Who knew? Getting braces is now something to smile about.) What age do you generally recommend starting orthodontic treatment? Age seven is an excellent time to have your child evaluated for the first time by an orthodontist. This is the age when the first permanent molars and the incisors should have come in properly. Early evaluation allows for proper diagnosis and treatment, if necessary… Orthodontists can determine if there are any problems that may develop in the future, giving the parent and doctor an opportunity to plan future treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends age seven for the first orthodontic consultation. How does WildSmiles make going to the dentist/orthodontist less intimidating and scary for children? WildSmiles Braces are the first and only proven corrective appliances that allows patients to design custom smiles. Our braces empower self-expression for kids. Kids are excited to come to the orthodontist and talk about their braces and show them off to their friends. WildSmiles help patients be serious and silly at the same time—kids get a beautiful result and make the journey fun and enjoyable. Even professional football players will wear football-shaped WildSmiles braces! What are the top 5 questions parents should ask at the first orthodontist visit? 1. Does my child have any missing or strangely shaped teeth? 2. Do the jaws and teeth match with each other? 3. Will my child benefit from early treatment? Why? 4. Will my child require complete orthodontics later? Why? When? 5. How can we make this process easier and more fun for my child?

What can parents do to help their kids take care of WildSmiles braces? Parents can constantly give kids confidence by allowing them to design their own smiles. When kids use WildSmiles, they have the power to decide how their braces will look, which is extremely exciting. Parents should encourage their kids to keep their WildSmiles (and teeth) clean as well as offer cold food and drinks to relieve discomfort throughout the braces process. What do you say to kids who are embarrassed or even scared about having braces? How do you help instill confidence? Braces and treatment with Wildsmiles is fun, period. With WildSmiles, kids are excited to begin treatment with choices, which gives them confidence, and makes for a better overall experience. WildSmiles makes children proud of their braces, which means they do a better job following brushing and eating instructions. WildSmiles is all about empowering patients to help design their perfect smile.

Why is back-to-school season a great time to get a new wild smile? Parents are so strapped for time, but back to school is the perfect season to set an initial appointment with your orthodontist. The first braces appointment can be long (two to three hours), so summer and back-to-school timing allows a little extra wiggle room for scheduling. It also allows for plenty of time to decide which shape bracket you use. WildSmiles is great anytime of year, but back to school tends to be the best time for parents to get the process started.

The only braces that turn correction into expression. WildSmiles is the first and only proven corrective appliance that allows patients to design their custom smile. Redefining the orthodontic experience with designer braces that empower self-expression. Available nationwide, WildSmiles is the first and only braces brand available to the consumer online at wildsmilebraces.com.

Sometimes we’re all too busy counting down the days that we forget to make the days count.

An organized student is a successful student. So how do you get your little learners to keep their surroundings clean and clutter-free? We spoke with Meryl Starr, a NYC and Tri-state areabased personal organizer and author of The Home Organizing Workbook, about how to promote good habits from the get go. From neat notebooks to clean rooms, these tips will encourage organization and academic excellence. How can parents help their kids develop organizational skills from day one? First of all, we need to teach our children to really keep only what they love or need—the things that bring them joy. It’s always important for children to surround themselves with things they love. Also, always keep like items together—all the board games go together, and all the puzzles go together, and all summer clothes go together. That helps you know what you have. It’s also important to have children put things back where they came from. It’s wonderful once they get in the habit, but you need to stay on top of it--because if you start that early, it will become a habit. If you just let them leave things all around, that will become a habit. How can parents use organizational tactics to streamline the morning rush hour? Be prepared the night before—it’s as simple as that. Make sure the homework is done, the forms are complete, the permission slips are signed. The other thing that’s important in the morning: Organize your refrigerator and pantry. You want to be organized in the morning—make sure the fridge is organized with the juice boxes, snacks, and lunch meats... Prepare five outfits for the children for each day of the week—so kids know what they’re wearing each day. Also, have a checklist by the door. What's the key to creating an effective and inspiring homework space for your kids? It needs to be inspiring and comfortable—and it should include things that bring children joy and motivation. So, in that space, put photos of kids out with their friends, a trophy, or a piece of art they made at school. The more inspiring the space, the more they’re going to want to be there. The more comfortable they are, the more time they’ll spend there. So much art, so little space. What do you suggest parents do with all the projects, papers, and artwork their kids bring home from school? It gets so overwhelming. Don’t throw things out behind their backs—let them keep their favorites. Less is more. Put the others in a box, if you have the room. I use Box Butler [a concierge storage service]—it’s a great fit for people who don’t have room [for all the extra stuff]. It’s a great price and they deliver to you. Back to school means back to PTA meetings, extra-curricular activities, football games, etc. What are some tips parents can utilize to maintain a somewhat organized routine--despite conflicting calendars? Get a big family calendar and use a different color marker for each family member. Assign a parent to each event. Parents also need to be aware of how many events they’re signing up for. It’s really important to learn to say “no”. We can’t do it all—we’ve got kids, houses to manage, and businesses to run, etc. How specifically does organization set kids (and parents!) up for academic and social success? I think the more organized you are, the more you can accomplish. The less you have, the less clutter you have, the clearer your mind. Kids have too many things and too many parties and too many classes. It’s important to be organized. Everybody needs down time. It’s also important to teach kids that actions have consequences. The more organized you are, the more you can keep track of your possessions—and you won’t lose things... Praise and positive reinforcement are key to academic and social success

STOCK UP ON SUPPLIES

Shopping Tip: You’ll likely have a list of “school supplies” to provide, but don’t forget to gather homework and project essentials to keep at home, too.

The basics don’t have to be boring.

2-in-1 tablet and laptop

- Most teachers end up spending their own money on extra classroom essentials and supplies. They want to give their students an epic educational experience, and so they dip into their own wallets without a second thought. It can get expensive and often goes unnoticed. This backto-school season, show your gratitude by giving your child’s favorite teacher a basket filled with practical products and fun finds. It will make the first day back on the job extra special for someone who truly deserves it. Lysol Wipes The classroom, gymnasium, locker room, computer lab, library… You name a school hotspot, and it’s covered with germs. Back-to-school season ushers in the return of colds and flus. Luckily, Lysol Disinfecting Wipes kill 99.9 percent of viruses and bacteria, including Influenza A, Human Coronavirus, MRSA, and more. The thick, strong wipe is great for cleaning up messes on hard surfaces too—including counter tops, sinks, doorknobs, light switches, desks, and keyboards.

Hand Sanitizer Your child’s teacher will be holding (germy) little hands throughout the day and helping kids with their personal belongings. A pump of hand-sanitizer will be much appreciated.

Throat Lozenges Lecturing from 9 AM to 3 PM can leave a teacher with a hoarse voice at the end of the day— a bag of Vitamin C lozenges will relieve a tired, sore throat.

Bandages Boo-boos will happen—to the kids and the teacher. A cute box of bandages will make paper cuts all better.

Starbucks Gift Card Teaching requires patience—and caffeine! (Lots of caffeine.) Help fuel your child’s teacher for the long day and longer school year with a Starbucks gift card.

Reusable Water Bottle Staying hydrated throughout the day will keep your child’s teacher energized and refreshed. Encourage healthy habits by including a reusable and eco-friendly water bottle.

An Apple Don’t forget to include the traditional teacher gift: a shiny red apple.

A little something to help you get back to the grind…

Check out another great back to school teacher’s gift with free printable.
