As it prepares to bow Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Bloodline this month, Netflix is adding another series to its roster of scripted fare.
Following a multiple-network bidding war, Netflix has picked up eight hourlong episodes of The OA, a drama from indie darlings and Sound of My Voice duo Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The premise of the drama series is being closely guarded and kept under wraps, but Marling will star and co-write alongside Batmanglij, who will direct. The OA will premiere in 2016.

The OA marks the first TV series Marling and Batmanglij have created. It builds on their relationship from 2011’s Sound of My Voice, and 2013’s The East, both of which they co-wrote, Batmanjlij directed and Marling starred. For her part, Marling also teamed with Mike Cahill on critical hit Another Earth, in which she also starred, and all three of which earned rave reviews the Sundance Film Festival.
Plan B’s (12 Years a Slave) Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will also executive produce the Netflix production alongside Anonymous Content‘s (True Detective, The Knick) Michael Sugar.
“We are thrilled to be the home of the first television series Brit and Zal create together,” said Cindy Holland, vp original content at Netflix. “Whether in front of or behind the camera, or both, their creative voice is always uniquely captivating.”
The OA joins a Netflix drama slate that includes Kyle Chandler starrer Bloodline, The Crown, House of Cards, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, season four of Longmire, Marco Polo, Sens8 as well as Baz Luhrmann‘s upcoming hip-hop drama The Get Down, among others.
Marling is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content and Sloane Offer; Batmanglij is with Hansen Jacobson.
