Paddy Power immigration truck feat. Murray, Farah and Sterling causes outcry

It didn’t take long for anger to surface on social media after the betting company sent a truck from Dover to Calais which carried the message: “Immigrants, jump in the back (but only if you’re good at sport).”

It was accompanied by images of Andy Murray, Mo Farah, Manu Tualagi, Raheem Sterling and Eoin Morgan – five sports stars born outside of England (Scotland, Somalia, Samoa, Jamaica and Ireland respectively).

Paddy Power insist that’s the serious message behind the campaign – that you can’t push for immigration controls, a key debate of the recent General Election, while cheering on stars that weren’t born in your country.

“Britain’s sporting future would be as grim as Andy Murray’s demeanour if we were to rely on ourselves to produce top class athletes, unless puking in Maguluf becomes a sport,” said a spokesperson for Paddy Power.

Strikes at the Port of Calais have led to long queues at the harbour, with migrants trying to climb on board lorries and sneak across the English Channel.
