LOWELL — Independent state-representative candidate Fred Bahou accidentally struck and injured two UMass Lowell students with his van while leaving Thursday night’s debate at University Crossing.

Bahou was traveling eastbound on Salem Street at what he called “a slow rate of speed,” when his Dodge Caravan collided with Kadeem Davis, a UMass Lowell freshman from Boston, and another unidentified student.

“All of a sudden they just appeared,” Bahou said.

Both were transported to Lowell General Hospital with minor injuries, Lowell police said. The accident is still under investigation.

In the debate, Bahou squared off against Democrat Rady Mom, his opponent for 18th Middlesex District seat vacated by Kevin Murphy when he became city manager in April.
