GOLDEN KNIGHTS SUFFER OVERTIME SETBACK TO ASSUMPTION

ALBANY–Assumption scored the winning goal at the midway point of the overtime session to upend The College of Saint Rose 8-7 in Northeast-10 Conference action tonight at Sullivan Field. The game featured seven ties with the Greyhounds (8-6/5-4 NE-10) manufacturing a slight 32-29 shot advantage. The contest furthermore marked the fifth one-goal setback of the year for the Golden Knights.

Senior attack Kevin Fleming had three goals and an assist, while senior midfielder Kris Miller finished with two goals and a pair of helpers to lead the Saint Rose (4-9/3-7 NE-10) charge. Freshman midfielder Matt Graham added a goal and an assist, while senior goalkeeper Nick Longo made 11 saves and senior defenseman Jake Files caused a pair of turnovers.

The Golden Knights benefitted from an own goal with 2:41 left in regulation that brought about the extra session. Saint Rose then won the opening faceoff, but Assumption forced a turnover and called timeout. Senior attack Garrett Smith then buried his own rebound for the game-winner after Longo made the initial save.

Neither team owned more than a one-goal advantage although Saint Rose rebounded from 6-5 and 7-6 deficits in the fourth quarter. Graham scored off a feed from junior attack Justin Golec at the 6:19 mark to make it 6-6 while the Golden Knights worked through a two minute, man down situation.

Smith then made it 7-6 Assumption with 3:32 to go in regulation, before a frenzy in the Assumption end led to the own goal that afforded the game its final tie with 2:41 to go.

Smith wound up with three strikes while senior midfielder Ty Martina had two goals and an assist for the Greyhounds, who have now won six of their last seven, including three straight.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights play their final regular-season game of the year next Saturday when #4 Merrimack arrives for a 1:00 pm meeting. Meanwhile, Assumption has a 7:00 pm date at Saint Anselm in Manchester, NH this Wednesday.
