Walt Disney World guests found themselves stranded for hours aboard one of the monorail trains Saturday.
Orange County Fire Rescue officials were called to assist Reedy Creek Fire and Rescue around 5 p.m. Saturday after the Yellow Monorail stopped on the track between Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Magic Kingdom.
Passengers were headed to Magic Kingdom from the Transportation and Ticket Center, where Magic Kingdom guests park, when the train stopped around 3:30 p.m., according to Jahon Pilichowski, 30, one of the passengers.
“It was kind of bizarre the amount of time it took to get emergency crews out,” said Pilichowski.
The monorails run on electricity, so passengers didn’t have air conditioning while they waited.
“It became like a greenhouse as soon as it stopped,” Pilichowski said. “All the cars were at full capacity.”
The second and third cars of the train were evacuated by a cherry picker, because passengers aboard had medical issues, according to Pilichowski. All other passengers were towed back to the transportation center and evacuated.
No injuries were reported.
“The minute we got to the ticketing station, a bunch of people from Disney were there to meet us with water, ice and anything we needed,” Pilichowski said.
Officials said a possible mechanical problem caused the stoppage.
