North-East Wrap: Hot Dogs at Healesville

Welcome along to Edition 2 of the North Eastern Weekly Wrap. We had a good week of racing that was highlighted by the heats of the Healesville Oaks and Derby last Sunday.

We kicked off the week with a good card of racing at Shepparton last Thursday. The most impressive winner of the day for mine was Soda Lad in Race 10, who bounced out very quickly from Box 2 and found the lead in a Restricted Win heat. He kept running throughout to score clearly over the smart Elbow Room, who chased valiantly but was no match in the best time of the day 25.38. (Replay)

That pair will meet again in this Thursday’s Restricted Win final (Formguide)

Other impressive winners on the program included Airbound in Race 5, Esparza in Race 6, Chrichton Bale who came from off the speed in Race 8 and in Race 9 Dime absolutely relished Box 8 and won comfortably.

Racing then headed to Bendigo on Friday and the feature race on the program was the GRV Vic Bred GOBIS Final. Favourite was Senor Gold (8), who was impressive in his Heat win a week prior, while others in the market were Angel Of Music (1) and Kid Audacious (3). From box rise it was Angel Of Music who jumped best from the inside and led from Senor Gold, who crossed to her outside. Kid Audacious was slow out and from that point on never got into it. Turning into the home straight Senor Gold was gradually closing in on Angel Of Music and got there in the nick of time to bring up win 13 at start 47. (Replay)

Other winners of note included Rip It in Race 3, who has now won 2 of his 3 starts, Northern Blues in Race 7 and Immortal Panther who won the last by a big space.

On Sunday racing in the North-East moved along to Healesville where there were 3 heats of The Healesville Oaks and 4 heats of the Healesville Derby. Race 3 kicked off the first Oaks heat where Amelia Christa came out fast from Box 7 and shared the lead early but once clear and able to cross to the fence she careered away to win really well. (Replay)

The next heat of the Oaks was Race 4 where Kept Under Wraps for Wayne Vassallo was a strong winner. She got clear running early and was powerful late and you would think she will be hard to beat in next Sunday’s Final. (Replay) In the last heat Kyls Me Mate speared away from Box 7 and was never threatened leading all the way. (Replay)

The first heat of the Derby was a ripping affair with anyone of 5 looking the winner close to the line but it was Kel Greenough’s Yadi which prevailed and he never looked like winning at any stage. (Replay) In heat 2 Shazzles Boy was the victor. Jumping 2nd behind Silvertop he was able to work to the lead midrace and was too good late. The fave Danyo’s Slappy got smashed early and was never a factor. (Replay)

The 3rd heat saw the flying Allkel to Excel come out flying from Box 3 and he never let up winning in an outstanding 18.94, making it 2 heats winners for Kel Greenough. You’d think he will be awfully hard to beat in the final. (Replay) The last heat of the Derby was similar to the first heat in that at one point there was a host of winning chances midrace but it was Red Light Runner who was strongest late to score well over Pay Da Trail and Dozer Tron. (Replay)

The finals of the Oaks and Derby will be run this Sunday, with each race boasting prize money of around $9,000.

That’s all for this edition of the North Eastern Weekly Wrap. A terrific week of racing coming all highlighted by next Sunday’s program on the straight track at Healesville. There will be a preview of both finals this Sunday, keep an eye out for that. Until next week good luck and good punting.
