ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) -- The shooting that shut down Isle of Palms County Park on Memorial Day was self-inflicted, police say.

According to a release from the Isle of Palms Police Department, the victim shot himself in the leg while playing with a pistol in the back seat of a car. The man initially told investigators he had been shot by another person, then changed his story at the hospital, admitting he accidentally shot himself.

Crews responded to the shooting at the park on 14th Avenue just before 4 p.m., a supervisor at Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch said. Isle of Palms Police Capt. Kim Usry said the man was shot in the back of the upper thigh.

Because of the incident, the park was shut down for the remainder of the day.

Police did not announce any charges against the man.{}
