Molokai junior Cendall Manley is wrestling for much more than herself at this weekend's Chevron Hawaii/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships.

Wrestling runs in the family for Manley, who won both of her first-day matches in the girls' 155-pound weight class at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena Friday.

Manley's father, Randy, is the longtime coach of the Farmers, while older siblings Clinton, Colton and Charisse all wrestled in high school. Whatsmore, her younger brother, Caele, is competing in the boys' 113-pound bracket this weekend.

"We're a family of wrestlers," Cendall Manley said, following her quarterfinal win over Nanakuli's Tyzandria Wells Friday.

The Manleys have seen their share of wrestling, but one moment has eluded them: a state championship.

"So far we haven't had it," Manley said. "My oldest brother, Clinton, took second three years in a row and my sister was seeded first for her senior year, but she had an injury and she didn't place that year, so we're still hoping for that championship for our family."

The latest hope comes in the form of Cendall, who will meet Aiea's Avei Lualemaga in a semifinal bout Saturday morning. After defeating Campbell's Aaliyah Wright, 6-2, in a first-round match, Manley had to rally past Wells — who was coming off a stunning upset of top-seeded Taj-Destiny Vierra of Kamehameha in the first round.

Manley trailed Wells 1-0 after a technical violation in the first period before taking the lead in the third and securing a pin at the 5:13 mark.

"They said I hit her in the face too hard," Manley said. "I really didn't think the call was valid, so it really upset me. One point can mean winning or losing in this competition, so I was really upset, but I think it really motivated me to dig deeper and I knew I had to get points or it would all be over."

Manley, who finished second in the Maui Interscholastic League championships and came into states unseeded, started the third period against Wells in the down position. She worked an escape, followed by a takedown and eventually a pin.

Manley placed fifth in the state at 140 pounds as a sophomore last year. She said she expected to see Vierra in the quarterfinals.

"I actually messed up the brackets and thought I was wrestling her and then when the Nanakuli girl came out, 'I was just like, OK, well I've just got to go out there and wrestle my match,' " Manley said. "I've never wrestled her before so it was just a shot in the dark. She's a great wrestler and it was a hard match. I'm just so blessed to have come out on top. I'm so overjoyed."

Manley and the Farmers sit in sixth place in the girls' team standings heading into Saturday's final day.

Defending champion Kamehameha and Lahainaluna are tied atop the standings with 88 points apiece. Campbell is third with 65 points, Kahuku fourth with 61 points and Pearl City rounds out the top five with 58.5 points.

"I think we're sitting pretty with several of our wrestlers who were not top seeds, but they're still alive, so tomorrow is another day and I think we've just got to make weight and put a little bit more effort into our scouting and see what happens," Warriors' coach Bill Venenciano.

Kamehameha and Lahainaluna each put seven wrestlers into the semifinal round, but the Lunas have five wrestlers still alive in consolation play, while the Warriors have just two.

Meanwhile, Punahou leads the boys' team standings with 87.5 points. Lahainaluna is second with 77 points, Campbell third with 63 points, Iolani fourth with 59.5 points and Kamehameha and Moanalua round out the top five with 58 points.

Among the Buffanblu's seven semifinalists are 132-pounder Joshua Crimmins and 195-pounder Robert Straton.

Crimmins, the top seed at 138 pounds, rallied past two-time state finalist Zack Diamond of Mililani, 5-3, in a first-round bout. Diamond held leads of 2-0 (in the first period) and 3-2 (in the second period), but allowed an escape and takedown by Crimmins in the final 1:17 of the match. Crimmins avenged a semifinal loss to Diamond in last year's state tournament.

"Crimmins did his job today. He secured the No. 1 seed through, he deserves it obviously," Punahou coach Yoshi Honda said. "We concentrated real hard on trying to keep him up and keep him ready for his next match and to avoid a let down after that first match."

Crimmins eked out a 1-0 win over Baldwin's Alika Kalilikane Delos Reyes in the quarterfinal round.

Straton, who did not wrestle last year to focus on football, entered the tournament unseeded after placing second at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships last week. He pinned both of his first-day opponents — Kamehameha's Kekoa Pires in the opening round and third-seeded Rex Hazuka of King Kekaulike in the quarterfinals — to secure a spot in the semis.

"He's a great athlete and a wonderful kid," Honda said of Straton, who will play football at Dartmouth next year. "This is my first year working with him and he's just a joy to work with."

Honda noted the importance of Saturday's 10 a.m. semifinal round to the team race.

"Who shows up tomorrow in that first round will be very important," Honda said. "We've got to show up and wrestle again. We've just got to go out there do what we did today. We've just got to go out there and wrestle as hard as we can and see where it falls."

Saturday's championship finals are expected to start at 3:30 p.m.
