This masterclass is run in partnership with the MA Dramatic Writing at Drama Centre London, Central Saint Martins, as part of London Writers Week – an annual celebration of new writing talent in the UK
This creative writing course will teach you how to develop work based around issues of gender and identity. You’ll spend the day working with Lucy Kerbel, director of Tonic Theatre, developing an idea for an original piece of writing – whether you want to create a work of theatre, TV, radio, fiction, non-fiction or poetry.

- Writing with gender in mind
- Explore how your own gender impacts your experience of the world
- How to express your experience of gender in your writing
- Developing new ideas for writing projects
- Discussion of current plays, companies and producers that explore gender and promote gender equality
- Practical exercises: develop ideas for your writing project exploring gender and gender equality
- Receive feedback and tailored advice on your writing practice
- Pitching scenarios: how to express your ideas with confidence, clarity and conviction
- Q&A and discussion

Tutor profile
Lucy Kerbel is the founder of Tonic Theatre, an organisation created in 2011 to help the theatre industry achieve greater gender equality in its workforces and repertoires. Today, Tonic partners with leading theatre companies around the UK on a range of projects, schemes and creative works. So far, Tonic’s partners have included the Royal Shakespeare Company, Young Vic, Sheffield Theatres, West Yorkshire Playhouse and the National Theatre Studio (where Tonic is an affiliate company). In addition to her work with Tonic, Lucy directs for the stage and is a regular speaker on women within the arts. She is also one of the 10 ‘Masters’ behind the new MA in Dramatic Writing at Central Saint Martins, London.
