Leading up to free agency Devils GM Ray Shero said he wasn't looking to make a splash or do something he'll regret in a couple years.

Well, he stuck to his word as his only notable move was signing defenseman John Moore to a three-year contract worth $1.66 million per season.

Moore, 24, is a 6'3' blue liner who can skate and rush the puck up ice. He makes a good first pass and tends to drive play in the right direction, however, he's not going to put up a ton of points.

Defensively his game is adequate but it's nothing to write home about. He's also not overly physical for a guy his size, which is a common knock against him. One benefit of that is he's very disciplined, and won't hurt you with many bad penalties, as he only had 30 penalty minutes in 58 games last season and 25 in 74 games the year prior.

He has his faults but Moore is a good defenseman. His underlying numbers since the 2012-13 season actually suggest he's performed at a top-4 level despite bouncing around and playing for a few different teams.

Moore is already a solid NHL blue liner and, at 24, there is still potential for him to grow.

He should get ample opportunity to take the next step while playing for a rebuilding team that is especially young on the backend.

There's really nothing to dislike about this signing.
