White Pine #1

A Kiss to Build a Dream On

Rate this book
TROUBLE IN HIGH HEELS...

If pride goes before a fall, Willa Masterson's trip back to White Pine, Minnesota, should be one heck of a tumble. The girl who left her hometown—and her first love, Burk Olmstead—in the rearview twelve years ago was spoiled and headstrong. But the woman who returns is determined to rebuild: first her family house; then her relationships with everyone in town . . . starting with a certain tall, dark, and sexy contractor.

MEETS HER MATCH

Burk has no reason to believe Willa has changed, and every reason to discourage her from converting the Masterson house into a B&B. He has plans of his own for that house, and they certainly don't include a no-vacancy sign. But Burk didn't count on how distracting Willa's bright green eyes or her all-too-familiar touch would feel—or how impossible she will be to resist...

I believe that this is a debut novel by Kim Amos and a beginning of a new small-town romance series, a trope which is very popular in the genre. I was pretty intrigued with it because the blurb promised a sort of second-chance theme -- Willa and Burk used to be high-school boyfriend/girlfriend up until Willa packed her bag and left White Pine, Minnesota without even a note.

Unfortunately, this didn't hit the mark quite yet for me.

I think my biggest issue is on the characters themselves. I found Willa to be less sympathetic that I wanted her to be. She is described to be quite bitchy in high school, even mocked those with less perfect physical trait. On top of that, she looks down on White Pine, thinking that New York or East Coast lifestyle is the better way to live. Usually, with heroines like Willa, she will realize her mistake and do kind of penance.

However, I thought that Willa didn't really show it. I mean, she was indeed quite determined to be successful with her B & B. She also did offer herself to help coaching the track team. She didn't refuse to be part of the Knots and Bolts girls club. BUT, somehow I still thought that she approached everything by thinking that East Coast way was what the White Pine people needed. She didn't do enough research ... and she felt that just because her father owned the bank, she could easily get the loan. She also wasn't exactly self-sufficient and except for her good eyes when it came to decoration apparently, it took me quite a long time to warm up to her. She did kick ass in the end though, with her ex.

It didn't mean that Burk was better in my eyes. I thought Burk was too distant and too detached with Willa. I could understand his action; he was hurt and he didn't entirely sure that Willa would stick around anyway. However, it made the romance between Burk and Willa not entirely convincing. Usually, there are undeniable sparks and tensions that make me rooting for the couple. In this case, I didn't even care if they never made it to their HEA.

Having said that, I still thought the series had potential. I would be there for the second book because again, it seems that it will be second-chance kind of story. It's my weakness.

There is nothing that I like better than a good second chance romance. Throw in a former mean girl who finally understands how it feels to be on the less fortunate side of things and the wrong side of the tracks guy who has worked his way to the right side of them, and this story takes a whole other level of perfect.

I really enjoyed the slow but steady re-igniting of the romance between Burk and Willa, but there was so much more to this story than that. The way that Willa realized how awful she was to everyone in town as a teenager and, instead of being defensive and trying to explain her behavior away or pretend it never happened, she owned up to it, apologized and tried to make up for it was one of my favorite parts of the story. The friendships she made and the growth she experienced from it was a bonus.

The whole aspect of the house, the remodel and what it represented to both Willa and Burk was a perfect way to tie all of it together and to help them find their way to their HEA.

The writing is flawless and you'll find yourself lost in the sweet town of White Pine. I can't wait to find my way back for Audrey story.

Welllll.....fill in the holes, please, author, because there were several. And, editor, check that the same word for house (structure) is not used repeatedly. And, editor, check that the very same sentence about heroine's father owning the bank is not used three pages apart. And, editor, use your red pen to suggest something other than 'stormy blue eyes' and 'she brushed back her dark blonde hair'. Plus, give me a deeper plot. Flesh out the other characters. Some snappy dialogue would be great as well.

This was a nice little romance, with a little heat to it! I enjoyed the story of two individuals that were each others "first" and the story of how they lost one another. It was fun watching her grow into a really strong person and go out and get the love and friendships she deserved!

Willa left her hometown White Pine Minnesota, for New York,12 years ago.She returns with her tail between her legs, totally broke after being swindled out off her life savings by her unscrupulous boyfriend Lance.Willa has no money,no career and no friends after her snobby New York set turn their backs on her.The only asset she has is her family home. She decides to turn her fortunes around by making it a Bed and Breakfast. The trouble is the property is badly run down and in need of major renovations to bring it up to scratch.Willa is forced to enlist her former boyfriend and first true love Burke(now a contractor)to help her.Sparks fly as they realise that there is unfinished business between them.I really enjoyed this story and loved Kim Amos writing style, filled with warmth and humour. Its a classic story of redemption and second chances. There is also some very sexy love scenes that steamed up the pages.I did have just a couple of issues with the story though.Willa is not the most sympathetic character. She is spoiled and stuck up,She dumped poor Burk 12 years ago with no explanation.Acts like she is too good for her home town.Worse of all she was a bully to her classmates,in particular poor Audrey and Betty. She recalls making fun of Betty due to a physical imperfection,ie her crooked teeth. It is never fully explained why she was so cruel to her?As someone who was bullied at school I found this incomprehensible. To her credit Willa owns her mistakes, makes no excuses and apologises publicly and sincerely to them both.I liked her better after this.Betty and Audrey(both great characters)show remarkable grace in forgiving her.We also don’t know what on earth Willa was doing in New York for 12 years? She did not go to college or have a career, she appeared to be just a spoiled socialite. She does experience major growth and depth as a character by the end of the book. She became more likeable and I was cheering when she sorted out her creep of her ex boyfriend.I won’t give away what happened but oh boy, you go girl.Willa is awesome here.I thought Burk was cute, sexy and a perfect match for Willa.I also enjoyed the side romance between Betty and the reverend. The ending is sweet and satisfying.I loved the sound of White pine.Sounded the the sort of sweet homely town I would love to spend time in.

In the beginning of A Kiss to Build a Dream On Willa comes home to Midtown Repossession to the apartment she shares with Lance in New York City. Two months later Willa returns to her home town in Minnesota after her life is essentially decimated by her boyfriend Lance’s bad decisions (he has lost all investments from Willa as long as a LONG list of clients and is facing prosecution). And what is waiting for Willa in White Pine? Why her family home (which has essentially been empty for three years) and of course, her high school sweetheart – Burk. Willa’s plan is to revamp the family home into an upscale B & B…using Burk (a local contractor). Now here is what I am thinking…that can’t be a good idea. Hiring the guy you were madly in love with before you left White Pine’s behind for greener pastures… but I guess the using goes both ways as Burk figures he has Willa all figured out. She would leave town during the renovations (she never sticks around after all) and then he could get the Masterson home for a steal… after all…

”If by some chance she managed to do something he hated in the short time she was here, he could always change it back when she left. Because she would leave. She always did.”
One of the things I liked most about this book is the evolution of Willa as a person. We are introduced to a seemingly self-centered person but through circumstances brought upon her as a result of Lance’s greed, she is left essentially penniless and homeless in New York City. So Willa retreats to her home town of White Pine – to start over again with the only asset left to her; a run-down family home. She realizes quite quickly that in order to fit in, she will need to eat a big helping or two of humble pie and apologize (sincerely to those she did wrong by before she left town so abruptly 12 years ago. And the list is not short; though only mentioning two from the Knots and Bolts crew:

Audrey Tanner – now the high school girls’ track coach. Audrey recruits an out of shape Willa to assist in the coaching… too funny :)
Betty Lindholm (proprietor of Knots and Bolts) – who Willa teased mercilessly about her jutting teeth.
My thoughts on Willa reflecting on her past with her mom; while holding her favorite mug – a chipped ceramic behemoth that had been her mom’s. The mug was one of the few items that Willa was able to salvage from New York and bring with her back to White Pine. We get a glimpse of Willa’s depth and a glimmer of her life with her mom:

“When she wanted to remember the best parts of her mom, it was through this mug. Like how her mom would use it to fix Willa warm soup for fighting off the flu, or bring her hot tea as they sat outside in the sharp springtime air, both of them shivering but desperate to enjoy the outdoors after a long winter.”
At times both Willa and Burk acted like high scholars…. not using their words, assuming things about the other without verifying true intentions/feelings. I interpreted this behavior as a result of Willa leaving Burk (her true love) abruptly right out of high school so that she would not be hurt by her assumption that he would indeed leave her…as everyone in her life had to that point in time. In all fairness, the past is the past…. and you can certainly see the growth and evolution of Willa and eventually Burk.

And if you thought that Willa saw the last of Lance then you will be sorely mistaken. The scene with Willa and Lance in White Pine is intense and written in a thought provoking (and kind of scary) manner… elicited many emotions while I was reading this section.

And to really shake things up…getting on the right “love track” was not just solely for Willa and Burk…. I love the other romantic liaisons and how they evolved! Had quite a chuckle actually when Willa became a love guru to the pastor. Lest we forget, the passion and intensity between Burk and Willa is HOT. The love scenes were well written, even with surprises thrown in. Loved it when she referred to Burk with the pet name from high school during one particular amorous encounter:

“My king, she murmured, her hands flattening along his abdomen, then unbuttoning his pants. Burk’s throat tightened at the name she used to call him, after they were crowned king and queen at prom senior year.”
The depth of characters, in addition to the story line, hunky guys and sympathetic gal pals created a positive and fun reading experience. My enjoyment of the first in this new series is such that I cannot wait for the next in the series! I want to know more about the inhabitants of White Pine, Minnesota.

Small towns have long memories. Willa once had it all until her boyfriend lost it all. The former mean girl returned to her hometown of White Pine after twelve years, with her tail tucked between her legs and a big dream in tow. Even though she buried her feelings of guilt and shame behind pretty smiles, she knew she had to make amends if she hoped to have any success with her plans of opening a posh B&B. She had to show them she wasn’t the snobbish former prom queen, track star and Dairy pageant winner anymore.

Willa (30), was not entirely sympathetic for a large part of the story. Based on the descriptions of how she’d treated people, everyone she’d wronged had the right to be wary of her abrupt return. For a thirty year old woman, she was incredibly naive about many things. She wasn’t entirely self-suffient: she couldn’t cook, didn’t know how to put gas in a car, she didn’t know where to get paint, and she naively assumed her father’s legacy would get her a business loan. She had no friends, no college degree, and the little bit of money she had left would only carry her so far or it was tied up in her family home. Making money off her home was her last resort. But I had to admired her determination to learn and try to dig herself out of a hole. As for the root of her relationship problem with Burk, it all came down to abandonment issues.

Burk (30ish) didn’t start out as a sweet, sexy hero. Willa’s return surprised and shook him up. The hurt and resentment still lingered, but he wasn’t out for revenge. I really liked how he tried to remain indifferent towards her and keep his focus on the house, ready to relieve her of it when she took off again. It was what he was expecting her to do. It was sweet to see his sister get involved with advice or serve up a mini lecture.

I wasn’t entirely convinced of them as a couple. Back in the day he was besotted by her, but I didn’t fully get why she was a bully towards others and not to him because socially, he was beneath her. As adults, he seemed more mature and more experienced in life and she was…not. However, this did work in terms of opposites attracting, and I had to admire her determination to learn how to do simple things for herself, take ownership of her past, letting people in and accepting help. She showed great character growth during the climax of the story. Burk was far from perfect throughout, but he learned a thing or two. He wasn’t the typical hero material, but I understood where he was coming from. The story took place over the span of about a month, and by the end of it, I thought they were perfect for one another.

This was a light and fun read by new to me author Kim Amos. I recommend it to anyone looking for love, laughs, and a bit of small town drama.

Sweet, a little bit sexy, and very easy to read. This book is just one of those books that, while it doesn't capture and entrance you, fills your hours with gentle smiles and some good, tingly feels.

Burk Olmstead never expected to see Willa Masterson again. Certainly not after more than a decade, and certainly not to lay claim to the house he's been taking care of since she split town.

Then again, Willa Masterson never expected to come back to her hometown, tail between her legs, with only one goal -- to turn her family's rundown old house into a fabulous new B&B. Of course, she didn't plan on the contractor being her ex-flame, or that their passion for each would not be dulled by all the years apart.

Kim Amos has put together a very cute, quite charming little book. I enjoyed the read, although I must admit, a handful of days after finishing it, I am struggling to remember the little things. A Kiss to Build a Dream On is a book I don't regret reading, liked well enough at the time I was immersed in it, but didn't leave an overly-lasting impression.

Having said that, there are some things I DO recall about this book... I struggled through the easy stages, because I disliked Willa's willfulness and her lofty demeanor, and because I was annoyed at Burk's selfish underhandedness. However, both of those characters grew on me. Willa was willing to learn from her mistakes and attempt to put right the past, and Burk was willing to let go of a long-held dream for something bigger. I may have taken to about 60% for me to start to appreciate them, and it may have taken to about 69% *snickers* to get to the really good sex, but I would say it was definitely worth the wait.

I am intrigued, now, to see what comes next for this series. The set-up for the second book, focusing on Audrey, one of Willa's sweet friends, was buried in there and peaked my interest enough to plan to pick up more from this author. ~ Beth, 3.5 stars

I really wanted to love A Kiss to Build a Dream On. Some of my favorite books are second chance romances, but this one just didn’t do it for me—well, at least the first half of it. I found myself waiting to get to the “good part” the part where Willa and Burk and the rest of the characters “talked” to each other and what happened to get them to put the past behind them. Early in the book, there was a lot of internal monologue that easily could have be put to dialogue and made the book that much richer.

Now, the second half of the book was fantastic. Willa, Burk, Audrey, Betty, Anna, Stephanie and Pastor Sondheim really developed as characters and the story took off. Loved the interactions with the women at Betty’s shop and I can’t wait to read Audrey’s story in the next book. ~ Missy, 3.5 stars

Willa shook off the dust of White Pine years ago. While her reasons for leaving might have been selfish and foolish, still she made her choice. Now that she has been forced back to her hometown by circumstances that weren’t entirely beyond her control she has a lot to atone for.

Burk sure didn’t expect Willa to return home from her big city life. She left him behind without a word and the hurt of that betrayal still stung, he had to admit. But the important fact was that he had to get her back out of town as soon as he could. Not only for his own sanity and his plans for her family home, but before she captured his heart again. And that was something he could not afford.

During her high school years Willa had been – well, let’s just be honest here – she’d been a royal, privileged, spoiled brat, a complete and total bitch. The fact that she acknowledged that now, years later, does count in her favor. But she hurt a lot of people with her nasty words and actions. It will not be easy to re establish herself as a member of the community wanting to start up a business and live in her hometown once again.

I enjoyed this first novel in the White Pine series. A woman who must make up for her past actions and a man who really never stopped loving her have a rough road ahead of them in this one. I have to admit to enjoying seeing a total bitch get her due, even if I did sympathise with her on some levels. Come on, we’ve all done stupid things, said things that we regret. Maybe we apologized within minutes or days, not never or years later. But we’ve all suffered the stupidness of being young. I appreciated that she got what she perhaps deserved from some people from her past, but also that it didn’t take over the entire story.

I loved the interior design comments sprinkled throughout the novel. And I might have picked up a few ideas to use in my own home. And the home cooking – excuse my tummy growls.

Overall, this was an enjoyable reading experience and I would recommend A Kiss To Build A Dream On. It gets a 4 outta 5 on my rating system.

My rating scale = 4 outta 5 = a really, excellent novel that was great just didn’t go beyond.

*I received an e-ARC of A Kiss To Build A Dream On from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*

As much as I love a good romance, I have to admit that if I saw this book in the store I probably wouldn't have picked it up. It's just not the kind of cover I'm drawn to. Granted, I've probably missed a lot of great books because of my tendency to judge romance covers. When it comes to this book though, I knew it was going to be good because although this is Kim Amos' first dip into romance, I have read and loved everything else she's published under her other pen name. I was uber excited to get my hands on an ARC of the book and I seriously fell in love with the world of White Pine as soon as I began reading.

I loved that the two lead characters are both flawed in their own ways. There wasn't that unrealistic perfect guy or girl running around the book which was great. I also adored the idea of a former Mean Girl facing up to her past and trying to make good. The relationship of the women in the book is encouraging and supportive instead of dismissive and bitchy. The description of the food was delicious and even the scenery description which I'm usually not a fan of gave a great setting for the story without being too descriptive. My only reason for not giving the book five stars was my own personal dislike of the whole guy carrying the chick up the stairs to bed thing. I know, it's a regular in romance and I'm pretty sure I've written it once or twice myself but yeah... I can't read those scenes and take them seriously. There's no way a guy is ever carrying me anywhere because even if he could lift me, it would just end horribly. LOL I also felt like the end was just a little too rushed and too quick to put a bow on everything. With that said though, I enjoyed reading this so much that I found myself wanting to keep reading all night but also wanting to stop myself because I didn't want the book to be over. I'm definitely a White Pine fan and after reading the preview of book two, I'm already hooked!

Oh and I think the inclusion of a hot dish recipe was a really great idea. :)

Willa Masterson was living a good life in New York before her ex was arrested for illegally investing money. Now with no money, she has to swallow her pride and go back to White Pine, Minnesota. White Pine is the small town where she was raised, where she left her high school love, and where she was everything but friendly to the people that live there.

With her little savings that her ex didn’t know about it, she plans to restore her childhood home into a B&B. When she meets the contractor she’s hired, Willa is immediately shocked to find it’s her high school boyfriend, Burk. Burk was the only person in White Pine that really understood her. Will they be able to work together? Or will their connection and tension make things hard?

A KISS TO BUILD A DREAM ON was such a great, entertaining story. The small town feel was refreshing to read. Willa was awful to her classmates in high school so coming back was hard for her. She was nervous she would be hated, but the town was very accepting.

I really loved Burke. He was a simple small town guy that knew what he wanted. The banter and situations between the two characters had me laughing the whole time.

If you’re looking for a sweet, Hallmark feeling, happy-ever-after story read A KISS TO BUILD A DREAM ON. You will not be disappointed.

As you all know, I rarely read romances, however, in the last 6 months I've read two. The first was a recommendation from this very author, and the second is the first foray of this very author in the genre. I feel fortunate to have read the ARC!

Admittedly, I wished the title of the novel was "Interior Design to Build a Dream On" if only because it was more interesting to me than the sex scenes. Granted, those are quite well done! It seems that at my age I'd rather read a great description of a beautifully-created room (recessed lighting! ooh! blue tables with bowls of lemons on them! aah!) than a great description of how folks are getting their rocks off. Hmm.

But that's really the great charm of these books - because I am looking forward to reading the series - that you can enjoy super fun descriptions of all kinds of relationships (friendship being key among them), interesting and heartfelt introspection from the main characters, solid and intriguing plotlines, the aforementioned romantic scenes, and bonus thrills and spills at the end. It's the best of all worlds.

Plus, so you're aware - cheese jokes. Knowing the author, she couldn't write the novel without them.

I just finished the second book in this series, and could have sworn that I already wrote the review for the first, but can't find it, so....

I enjoyed this. I think it's a good solid start for a new romance author. A friend of mine who is a romance editor (unrelated to this book) told me once that a good romance needs conflict individually within each of the hero/heroine, between the two, and between the two of them and the world. This story hits all three notes.

I thought that Willa was a little one-dimensional (rich and flighty, anyone?) for too much of the book, but maybe there really are people like that and I just don't spend any time with them, so she seemed a little unrealistic to me. But it didn't stop me from wanting to finish this book, and I knew that I would want to try the second. The delightful Knots and Bolts crew made sure of that! Those ladies are a blast, and knowing that there would be more stories of that set of women was a sure draw.

It turns out that I liked the second book even better than the first, and there's a publishing date set for the third for Fall 2015. Joy!

It is a refreshing read in A Kiss to Build a Dream On. In A Kiss to Build a Dream On, Willa has finally came back to her hometown after a terrific accident. Willa has a lot of challenges when she gets home because she was a selfish and spoiled teenagers that it will takes some time for the community to open up. I definitely can give Willa credit because she does admit she was selfish but she is going to right her wrong no matter what. However, things will become difficult for Willa because her ex-boyfriend, Burk, will not make it easy for her. I truly love Burk because he is the typical sexy men but he has a lot of heart that he will always protect what is his. I truly think it is a struggle for those two because they have to forgive each other in order to move on with their future. A good story line, especially the detailed description for decorations of homes. *4 Star*

Burke is something else, "someone is going to work on that house,” he said finally. “It might as well be me. And my crew . I don’t see what the problem is." He's a very passionate man, "like this?” he asked. “Is this what you want between us?” He shifted so she could feel the thick hardness of him. She closed her eyes at the shower of sparks that ignited her flesh." The boy needs to work on his after sex manners, "thanks,” he said, working to keep his voice flat and even. The bed shifted as he sat up and began pulling his clothes on wordlessly." It takes his sister to point things out for him to see what he did wrong with his woman, "Anna groaned. “You said this while you were in bed? Jesus, Burk. I mean, there’s stupid, and then there’s that." I liked this book it was a cute read.

This was the perfect choice for reading on this lazy rainy day!! It's a wonderful small town romance that is the start to what should be a fun series to read. It's got great characters and a story that is sexy and romantic. Can't wait to dive into the next one. Willa Masterson was the queen mean girl in high school and left White Pine for the bright lights of NYC without a goodbye to anyone. Not even her boyfriend Burk. When the life she started in NYC implodes spectacularly, she finds herself back in White Pine having to face all the people she hurt including Burk.

I highly recommend this one.

Before I even finished this book, I went online to buy it and preorder the next 2 books in the series. I really enjoyed Burk and Willa's second-chance story. It was romantic, sweet, emotional, and the little bit of action thrown in worked well.

I dropped a star because at times, I felt it was a bit slow and some of the sex scenes lost their sexiness with abundant uses of 'penis'. I know it's the correct word for that particular appendage, but it doesn't work during sex scenes. I also loved the inclusion of the Knots and Bolts group. This is a great group of friends and their inclusion felt honest and worked well.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I almost gave up on the entire genre, after reading one too many ridiculously written romance novels, but this book was a fun read, with great characters. The only problem I had was all the growling by the male in the book. If anything is growling in my bed, it better be the cat or the dog. Just way too weird to use that word, although I know Robyn Carr uses that same term...and it still bugs me!

When i First started this book, i didn't think i was going to enjoy it, it was like the classic rich girl looses all and crawls back home. This is not the way it was with this book. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to more. It was nice that Willa realized her past mistakes and owned up to them.
