The first season debuted on US cable network Starz in January 2014, with its second season currently on air and set to conclude on March 28.

A third season entered production in South Africa in October.

History's acquisition of the series follows the success of drama Vikings on the channel last year. The show attracted a total audience of 2.1 million viewers to score the channel's highest ratings to date.

"Following the huge success of Vikings, we are really pleased to bring viewers another premium drama to History."

Black Sails stars Toby Stephens as Captain Flint, as well as Tom Hopper (Merlin), Zach McGowan (Shameless) and Jessica Parker Kennedy (90210).

The series will debut on History in the UK this summer.
