Auburn Football Scrimmage Updates, Five-Star Basketball Commitment, and More

There are tons of stories from over the weekend, a bit too much for us consolidate into the usual link dump, so here's a bunch of various thoughts on Auburn-related events over the weekend.

TOOMER'S CORNER

By now you should know that Toomer's Corner is open again here in Auburn. In the daylight it looks amazing. At night, however, well...

This doesn't really show you just how bad (in my opinion) this looks. The lights change colors under the benches and on the curb at three points (not on the actual campus corner), and there are large LED lights on the northwest and southeast corner at stoplight level that are a bit confusing since the colors they change to are green and red at times. I can see that getting a bit confusing with the actual traffic lights if you're unfamiliar with the area. It also just looks a bit tacky, to me.

BASKETBALL

Bruce Pearl's 2016 class is looking spectacular at the moment. I believe in terms of graduating seniors we can only take three spots, so you have to wonder if the class is now full or if room will be made for another player or two to be added (Auburn is still in the mix for another five-star). I hate seeing someone being shown the door just to make room for a new prospect, though.

For now, let's focus on the awesomeness that Auburn got a commitment from a five-star strong forward in Mustapha Heron. Auburn rarely picks up a five star in basketball so this is, as they say, a big deal. He's also apparently very firm in his commitment, which is something I wondered about in that article, there. He says that his recruitment is over and he does plan on signing with the Tigers in November.

In other great basketball news, one of the highlights of Auburn's 2015 recruiting class, Danjel Purifoy, is on campus and starting classes today. There was some question as to whether Purifoy would be academically eligible, but it's clear that he is enrolled and will be able to start practicing with the team as soon as they begin their preseason workouts.

Auburn basketball is getting more exciting by the day.

FOOTBALL

Auburn scrimmaged for the second time during the 2015 preseason on Saturday. That scrimmage closed out the "camp" schedule as classes begin on the Plains this morning. The Tigers have the day off for the first day of classes, and we'll be getting closer and closer to game week preparation.

Some things that came out of the scrimmage from various sites:

- The offense rebounded and played much better in this one.

Carl Lawson didn't play. He didn't need to. No sense risking him getting injured.

- Duke Williams was carted off with an ankle injury that they're calling "not serious."

- After saying last week that reports seemed to say Roc Thomas was leading the pack at running back, it appears Peyton Barber is making a big push for that first spot. Jovon Robinson apparently got a lot of play in the scrimmage, but Roc and Peyton seem to be the 1-2, right now.

- Byron Cowart isn't exactly ready to start right now. He's coming along nicely, though. I believe he'll be a very big contributor by the end of the season.
