Fletcher: Observations from the Saints-Texans preseason game
While it's just the preseason, I'm starting to become a bit concerned about the New Orleans Saints.Since Sean Payton and Drew Brees arrived in 2006, the Saints have never finished the preseason winless.New Orleans is currently 0-3 after falling to the Houston Texans 27-13 Sunday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.Drew Brees only played one series and led the Saints to a field goal, but Brees looks in mid-season form after two brief exhibition appearances. Brees finished 4-of-6 for 40 yards versus the Texans. In my opinion, two young players solidified their roster spots in Sunday's loss. Rookie running back Marcus Murphy from the University of Missouri had 141 all-purpose yards and wide receiver Willie Snead from Ball State finished with 4 receptions for 56 yards. On the flip side is third-year quarterback Ryan Griffin. The former Tulane standout played less than a minute late in the fourth quarter and threw an interception. Logic tells us the Saints are happy with veteran backup Luke McCown and that rookie Garrett Grayson will serve as the third string, developmental QB.Personally, I don't think the Saints can afford to carry three quarterbacks. I think the Black and Gold have too many needs to other positions and carrying a third strong quarterback is a bit of a waste.I'd keep Grayson and cut both McCown and Griffin. The Saints thought enough of the former Colorado State signal caller to draft him in the third round last May, so make him the backup. Since he joined the Saints Drew Brees has never missed a game due to injury, so carrying just Grayson as the backup is a risk worth taking. The Saints continue to be sloppy in the preseason. Eleven penalties for 148 yards. Ugly! The good news for the Saints, they were a highly penalized group last year in the preseason but when the regular season started, they got it together. In 2014 the Saints were the 2nd least penalized team in the NFL.Perhaps the most concerning problem for the Saints is the fact that the defense has just one sack in the preseason. With 5:40 left in the third quarter against Houston the Saints got pressure on Texans third string quarterback Tom Savage and brought him down. Tyeler Davison and Tavaris Barnes were credited with the sack.In 2014, Rob Ryan's unit struggled mightily dialing up any type of pressure and the struggles continue in the 2015 preseason. Also, the Ravens and Texans first team offenses marched up and down the field on the Saints first team defense.I still think Rob Ryan is in charge, but is looks like senior defensive assistant Dennis Allen is handling more and more responsibility on the sidelines.I still maintain that if the Saints defense gets torched in week one at Arizona or in week two against rookie quarterback Jameis Winson and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Payton will just fire Ryan and hand the unit over to Allen. The coaching situation on defense seems awkward so it'll be interesting to watch how things unfold early in the regular season.READ: Texans take home preseason win over Saints, 27-13Final note, after drilling two field goals, one from 53 yards, it appears Zach Hocker will be the Saints kicker. The former Arkansas Razorback gets my nod over fellow youngster Dustin Hopkins. Let's just hope Hocker keeps kicking them dead-solid-perfect because Payton has no patience for kickers. In nine NFL seasons as a head coach Payton has employed eight different kickers: John Carney, Billy Cundiff, Olindo Mare, Martin Gramatica, Taylor Melhaff, Garrett Hartley, John Kasey and Shayne Graham.
