A study shows that the eucalyptus-based repellent containing 30% p-menthane-diol applied at a dose similar to those used in practice gave 96.89% protection for 4 h. While Deet only gave 84.81% of protection, it means that it is better at repelling mosquito’s than DEET.

P-Menthane-3,8-diol – an active compound in lemon eucalyptus essential oil is a common ingredient used in insect repellents, which smells similar to menthol and has a cooling feel.

How to Make Lemon Eucalyptus Mosquito Repellent

Things you have to prepare:

– Lemon eucalyptus oil

– Sunflower oil

Directions:

Mix 2 part lemon eucalyptus oil for every 20 parts of sunflower oil. Rub or spray on skin.

There are many other essential oils that are known for being great natural insect repellents such as:

– Cinnamon Oil (use with caution – cinnamon is a hot oil and may irritate the skin)

To use Cinnamon Oil on your skin it must be diluted to 1%. That means 1% Cinnamon Leaf Oil to 99% Water. Do not exceed this level!

– Orange oil

Orange oil is a natural ingredient that can deter mosquitoes from spoiling your fun, and it has a low occurrence of side effects and smells great.

– Basil

Basil is a herb that has a strong scent without even crushing the leaves, due to this, you can keep mosquitoes away from your house if you put basil indoor.

-Citronella Grass

Citronella grass is considered as one of the best mosquito repellent plants and is a main ingredient in many artificial repellents. It creates a mask around your room preventing the scents that invite mosquitoes. It’s also recommended to crush the fresh citronella grass and apply the oil on your body to prevent mosquito bites.

– Garlic

Garlic is a super plant with mosquito-repelling properties, due to its strong aroma.

– Peppermint

Same with basil and garlic, the strong smell of mint leaves keep the mosquitoes away from your home. Besides, it gives a great taste when added to your salads as well.

– Marigold

Pyrethrum in marigold is widely used in many artificial mosquito repellents, and the smell of it is just hated by mosquitoes. So it’s wise to choose this as an indoor plant for preventing the mosquito bites.

– Lemongrass
