For a group of children in India, the support of their sponsors also ensures they have a safe place to live while they are in school. In Delhi, Holt sponsors provide support to our partner Shishu Sangopan Griha (SSG) — a hostel for 80 girls aged 5-15 who have experienced abuse, neglect, extreme poverty or abandonment.
Some of the girls visit their families on holidays or weekends. Some don’t have anywhere else to go. For every girl, sponsors work alongside SSG to provide a loving, nurturing home where they know they can stay until they graduate from secondary school.
All the girls live in dorms and receive their meals on site. Each day, they walk to one of two nearby schools to attend classes. The bond they share is sisterly and strong, and they spend their evenings studying together or with a tutor, reading stories to one another, playing games or relaxing in their rooms. Sponsors provide for every one of their needs — from school supplies to clothing to computer labs and more.
Here, an older group of girls living at SSG introduce themselves, and tell you what their sponsor’s support means to them.
