TRAVERSE CITY — Authorities identified a man who died in a Kewadin explosion as Charles Lundy.

Lundy, 70, was in a pole barn near his Birch Lake Road residence on Monday and trying to weld an end onto an enclosed 55-gallon drum when the end burst and struck him, Antrim County Sheriff Dan Bean said.

"I would guess enough pressure heated up inside of that drum that it made the one end blow out," Bean said. "It appears it might have killed him on impact."

Lundy was welding the drum's ends to make a wheel that he planned to use to move his dock and swimming raft.

Officials pronounced Lundy dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled to take place in Grand Rapids.
