PIQUA, Ohio (WDTN) – Piqua police say a father’s quick action saved his daughter from serious injury when the family pit bull attacked them Wednesday.

Police responded to the family’s home in the 1000 block of Madison Street to find the dog attacking the father.

The Piqua Daily Call reports that that daughter made a sudden move for a cell phone that police believe startled the dog and caused it to attack the girl.

The report says her father jumped in front of his daughter to protect her and the dog turned on him.

Officers used tasers and pepper spray to get the dog under control.

The father suffered bites to his foot, ankle and leg. Police say a high leather boot he was wearing probably saved him from more serious injuries.

His daughter was bitten, but did not suffer serious wounds.

The family says it got the dog from an animal rescue that houses dogs that were once used for dog fighting.

The dog is under quarantine at the Miami County Animal Shelter.
