Title: Boiling Point
Series: Crossing the Line #3
Author: Tessa Bailey
Release date: January 26, 2016
Cliffhanger: No
HEA

"You've attracted the kind of animal who won't rest until he's mated to you for life."

Austin Shaw is a con man with an air of mystery about him. In this group of criminals who are aiding the police in return for their freedom, he's probably the most despised by everyone as well. He's abrasive, cocky, and as immoral as they come. Of all the men in the group, he's the most intriguing. The man is a chameleon. Able to shift his physical appearance, speech pattern, and body language as fast as you can blink. He's everyone and no one-a man who perhaps doesn't even know his own true self. He has years of conning innocent people-vulnerable women have been hurt badly. Too many to count. And his conscience is heavy with the irreversible harm he's caused. Not that he lets anyone know that.

Polly Banks is a strong heroine-she's the type of woman who takes care of business on her own. She's prickly, sharp, and doesn't take crap from anyone. She's a skilled computer hacker with her own private agenda while working for the police. Revenge. After her two fathers lost their business through a con man's scam, she vowed to return what what was wrongfully stolen from them. She also loathes and lusts after Austin in equal parts. The lusting part she just keeps to herself-the last thing she wants to do is let him in her panties. Until her quest for revenge intersects with Austin's past and they're thrown together in the least likely team against Charles Reitman.

Trying to immerse myself into this book was not easy. I actually did have to try hard, and push myself to finish. Here's what didn't feel quite right for me in the beginning: as the author slips us into the situation in the beginning chapters, Austin is already obsessed and in stalker mode with Polly. This is at 2% in:

Goddammit, he'd never felt an ounce of possessiveness over another human being in his thirty-one years. But just then, he wanted more than anything to walk up behind Polly, wrap an arm around her hips, and drag her back against his lap.

There's no lead-in at all for how he feels about her. No showing me why he feels this way before we see him follow her around, and take on the role of body guard as she puts herself in danger. Then we jump head first into the insatiable lust they have for each other.

Also, I felt that the book was heavily slowed down by excessive internal dialogue. All that characterization should have endeared me to both characters, but I found myself feeling a lack of emotion for both of them. They were well developed, but there was something missing that prevented me from caring about either of them. And as hot as the dirty talking was, (it was everything you'd expect from this author) the unusual dynamic these two had going on in the bedroom threw me off. Although Austin is a very confident and dominant man, he allows Polly to control him and punish him when they're together. It grows from his guilt and need for penance over his past. What they both discover is the pleasure they find in the power exchange. Polly unearths a need to hold the control and authority.

Being censured for his past sins had never felt more vital than it did right now. Polly was the only one who could do that for him. Would she?

I must admit, I've never read a book where the woman dominates sexually. It was unusual for me, but I'm open to read anything at least once. The incongruent back and forth submissive/dominant behavior between them just wasn't doing it for me. His kink didn't seem to come from a healthy place. If it was something that just naturally turned him on, that's one thing. But coming from his own self loathing didn't make it that sexy to me. Eventually, they did evolve into a mutually beneficial power exchange that was purely for pleasure's sake.

Polly had to learn to trust the biggest liar with the most important parts of herself. Her heart, her body, and her need for revenge. Could he be trusted, or would she be setting herself up for the ultimate betrayal?

In order to beat a con, she would have to become one. The very thing she's always hated the most.

This book ended up just being okay for me. I struggled through a large portion of it, but the action involving trapping Charles did improve the story for me somewhat towards the end. Yes, there was some major dirty talking and and some do-not-read-in-public moments, but overall, unfortunately it missed the mark for me.

Unfortunately it's not working for me. I don't like the characters and I couldn't keep my attention on this book. I tried to put it aside for a few days but I'm still not interested in continuing. I'm sure this is personal and not related to the book so I'm not going to review and rate this book.

I had a review for this and then accidentally deleted it, so I'm just going to keep this really short because I can't remember everything I had originally said. Basically my main reason for rating this book so low was because I felt no connection with the character. Rather than seeing why they felt the emotions they felt for the other character, we were only told that they had them. It made it hard to see them as a couple, and also hard to me to like them.

Overall, not the best book in the series, but it didn't turn me away from continuing with the books.

Now I remember. Crossing the Line is the first series I picked up from Miss Bailey's work long time ago. And I do not like it. Don't get me wrong, I love Miss Bailey. My recent pick of her books change my mind about her. Sadly, Boiling Point does not work for me.

Maybe it is the dialog/ banter or the plot. I do not know for sure. I do not like it. Even the blurp promising so much more. Sadly I shelved Boiling Point under DNF.

I will say that I was worried at first, but it ended up surprising me somehow, luckily…

For some reason, this has a different feel than my previous Tessa read. For a good portion of the book, I’m preoccupied with why that is; which then led me to think that it wasn’t a good sign bec it meant I wasn’t fully engaged. I felt like I was being pulled in and out of the story and I couldn’t figure out why, until it dawned on me, ok maybe this is just me, that there was a lot of narrative on this one. I found myself quite a bit inside the heads of both Polly and Austin. Then I got it! After that, I know Tessa will not disappoint me with where she will take me with her story.

The dynamics alone between Austin and Polly were quite interesting. It’s got elements of a D/s relationship but not in a way that I expected or in the usual environment that I’m familiar with in my romance reads. It happened more organically in their case, because of the time that they’re in, the feelings that they have at the moment, and the situation that they both found themselves in at the time. Austin had his reasons and so did Polly. The reversal as well of the D/s roles lent a different flavor, I thought.

Austin has a colorful past, did a lot of things wrong and as his time with Polly progressed, just wanted to right certain wrongs. Polly is also a product of her past, bent on getting back at the person responsible for the wrong things that came her family’s way. There’s of course the instant attraction but it did grow from that. The more they worked together, that attraction just went really explosive. Then it took a really emotional turn which was unexpected, to a degree. By the end, I’m just as enamored with Austin as Polly.

And seeing this is a romantic suspense, can’t forget that part of the story; the mission that propelled these 2 to work together leading to the sequence of events. Well played, Austin & Polly.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again; as far as I’m concerned, Tessa is the queen of dirty talk! Hot damn!

Con artist Austin Shaw’s been in disguise so long he’s not sure where his fake identities end and he begins. Now that he’s been strong-armed into working for a specialized undercover unit working with the Chicago police—criminals with unique “skills”—the last thing he needs is to risk his iron control. But an untrustworthy man of disguise can become anyone he wants…including a man that Polly must trust if she’s to escape their dangerous game alive.

What I Liked:

I've had a lot of success with Bailey's books, and this one wasn't a disappointment, despite the three-star rating. There were little things that bothered me, and overall, the book felt like a three-star novel to me. I've not read any of the books in this series, but I think I would be interested in reading the next book (the male protagonist is newly introduced in this novel, and he is intriguing!).

Austin Shaw is one of the best con artists in the business. He can slip from one identity to another, trying to forget who he is and where he came from. He's been working with a crew of fellow criminals, including Polly Banks, who has haunted his dreams and consciousness for six months. Polly has been attracted to Austin - and vice versa - since day one, but she knows better than to tangle with the likes of him. She has an ulterior motive, but Austin seems to figure out her plans faster than she can make them. One steamy encounter leads to more... but can she trust him to help her?

I liked Polly, which surprised me just a bit because I've been struggling with female protagonists in romance novels recently - especially the ones who are trying to run from the male protagonist. Polly is tough as nails and somewhat commanding, but she's also a little uncertain and vulnerable. I like both of her sides, and I like seeing her expose her whole self to Austin.

I liked Austin just as much or more than I liked Polly. He's a complicated man, and a clever, intelligent one, at that. He's more than an attractive, mysterious Brit - he's scarred where none can see, and he is very emotionally detached. He thinks Polly is too good for him and hates himself for wanting her so much, but he never stops wanting her.

The chemistry between these two is off the charts. Bailey always writes REALLY hot books, but this one is probably one of her hotter ones. Austin gives all the reins to Polly, which is new for her. She's never been the "dominant" one before, but Austin gives her that control. I'm not really a fan of books in which the male is more submissive, but I commend Bailey for writing the chemistry and sexual tension (and sex) as well as she did, given the huge reversal of roles.

Did I mention this book was all kinds of hot? Mmm.

This book had a great ending, which surprised me just a little, because this is a suspense-ish novel. I expected there to be some high stakes and heartbreaking points, but this book was low on the drama. I liked this! And the ending was really great. I loved seeing the changes in both Polly and Austin, to make the ending lovely.

What I Did Not Like:

My biggest thing was how much this book dragged, initially. It took me a while to really dig in. The hook came when the sexual tension practically exploded, which is fine, but it made me a little sad because I wanted the suspense part of the story to hook me too!

My other thing was that I'm not into books with the male being the submissive one. This is more of a preference thing! Austin isn't a "practicing" sub - like, he doesn't walk into this story a sub. He's every inch a dominant, alpha male, but he hands over the reins to Polly because he sees that it's something she wants. And he ends up liking it - but it's more that he wants her to punish him. I'm not into that sort of thing. I think Austin could have been so much hotter of a character if his alpha-male nature could have run free. Towards the three-quarters point of the book, Polly gives back the control. But I wish Austin had it from the start!

The story dragged in the very beginning, and then it hit some other boring-ish points in the middle of the book too. I LOVED the hotter parts of this story, but the suspense/crime part didn't really hook me, sadly.

Would I Recommend It:

I'm a huge Tessa Bailey fan and I would recommend this book if you're a Bailey fan as well. It's a really hot romance novel, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're not into male subs. I loved how Polly was assertive, but I wanted Austin to be the alpha male beast that he so clearly was.

Rating:

3 stars. Definitely a good romance novel, a hot one, but maybe not one entirely for me. Still, I want to read Henrik's book, which is next!

DNF 70%. NO RATING

I feel bad. I was waiting for Boiling Point since Connor's story. I wanted to know more, I wanted Austin's story so bad, maybe my expectations were too high but I didn't like this book at all.
First I never connected with the characters and their attraction. I get Tessa Bailey's man are all alpha. Austin is attracted to Polly but for no real reason. We don't get an explanation until after the 50 % and I wasn't even convinced. Falling in love when someone walks in a room is not conceivable to me. Insta-connection doesn't bother me but insta-love, if not done correctly are a big NO.

Austin is also very protective, almost stalking Polly, once again for no real reason. It bugged me from the start how he uses his tricks as a con to protect her. The girl is not even defenseless...

Secondly, the steam level here was different. It could have been a nice change for once. Usually you have a top alpha who doesn't take no for an answer. In this case, Austin wants to please Polly. So it was borderline BDSM without really saying it.
I find it odd. It was like Polly was forced to take the lead. Austin always saying she could do everything she wanted and then her acting up on it.
There was an edge to Austin character, but at 65 % I still don't know a lot about him and I'm bored...

I really wanted to know all his story and why he seems so broken but I can bring myself to care anymore...

Speak to anyone who reads a Tessa Bailey book and one topic is always at the top of the list: dirty talking men. I haven't read a single book of hers where the men haven't had a certain way with their words which is partly the reason she became a one-click author for that fix after reading the first in her Line of Duty series, alongside the fact they had entertaining storylines and she created great banter between her characters. Boiling Point brings us Austin: dirty-talking British grifter, and Polly: feisty computer-hacker with a dominant streak in the bedroom. This pair have a love/hate relationship, predominantly as Polly does not like con-men. And she has an axe to grind.

"...the biggest con of his life lay in convincing Polly he wasn’t a worthless shit bag."

I should have loved this; I'm a sucker for a good hustle and Austin is legendary in his field. But, and I'm beginning to sound like a stuck record saying this, the storyline was traded for sex, it felt unfinished and certain elements forgotten; neglected to make room for the dirty talk, which was overplayed and to be honest, crude.

"Go on and soak me. I earned every drop."
"You have me ready to spill, you dirty little lap dancer."
"I’ve got so much here for you, it’s going to fill this condom and drip down those fucking legs."

This isn't sexy to me, it's akin to a porno-film. And the fact that it's so off-putting did have an overall impact. There were odd moments I enjoyed; Austin's softer side at times was sweet, he comes over a Brit in his speech and I liked the switch on the dominant/submissive character traits. I'm sure this will hit the mark for others where it hasn't for me, but lately it seems that Tessa Bailey is relying too heavily on sex and dirty talk to hold her stories together, and that doesn't work for me.

Sometimes you're just not feeling a book and you're not sure why. This was sadly the case for me. I adore this author, but I just couldn't get into this story. I'm hoping the next installment will be better and I'll definitely continue to read all of Tessa's future releases. They can't all be 5 stars and you simply can't love them all. Moving on...

Reviewed for herding cats & burning soup.

Love me some Tessa Bailey! Boiling Point was an interesting one. A group of misfit criminals atoning for theirs sins by working as undercover agents for the police department. Hells yeah! That'll be interesting for sure. And I enjoyed it. Sizzling and steamy! Exactly what I expect from Bailey.

Alright the quick of it is that Polly is working on a side gig. The con-man who ruined her family is in town and she's going to put an end to him. Austin though? He knows something is up with the delectable Polly and he's determined to keep her safe and watch over her until he figures it out. And maybe join in when he does figure out her game.

Alright, I liked Polly and Austin quite a bit. They have an interesting chemistry and drive each other crazy but at the same time are drawn towards each other. Polly a spot more reluctantly than Austin. She's not down with con-artists and Austin? He's one of the best there is. It was fun watching them butt heads, scheme and become a team in their efforts as he slowly wore her down and she got to know the man behind the disguises.
"My life's plan starts and ends with getting my cock inside you."

Now on the heat. The two had amazing chemistry and, whew, when they go at each other it's pretty explosive. I so don't kid when I say sizzling and steamy. Bailey can write a nicely filthy scene (yay!) that'll have a girl squirming. Whew! This was the first time, though, that I wasn't totally in love with the sexy side of things and that had a lot to do with Austin being submissive...but not exactly pulling it off. It was the first Bailey hero that has been marked as submissive and while in certain moments the submissive side came though it felt like she didn't quite have a grasp on the submissive personality/dynamic and kept wobbling out of that. It felt like an alpha male trying to play at being submissive and topping from the bottom kind of? I'm not sure exactly how to explain it but it felt off and left me with a wobbly feeling where the sexual side of things was concerned. Individual scenes were great (seriously) but as a whole it just wasn't quite solid as I expect from her.

On the suspense and group side of things I really loved meeting all of the ex criminals in their group. They're an interesting and eclectic group and all have so much attitude! They had a sparkle to them and totally made me want all of their stories. The suspense was emotionally messy and the bits behind it tugged at my heart. I liked seeing it all come together and how they used their talents for criminal activity to try to set things to right.

All in all, while it wasn't my favorite Bailey read it was still a Tessa Bailey and those are pretty damn good no matter what. I'll definitely read more from the series and plan on going back to books one and two.

~~~~~~~
Notes:
1/27--This was a different one from Bailey. A semi-submissive male con artist working with a group of misfit criminals atoning for theirs sins as undercover agents for the police department. I enjoyed it. Sizzling and steamy as Bailey always is. I'm not a huge fan of the submissive male front though. I much prefer her alpha males. Though I wouldn't even classify him as a total submissive. Maybe a switch. Hrms. Full review to come.
1/24--Con artists working undercover for the cops. Interesting...
Lines have been crossed. Cons have been made. Revenge is on the mind. And sexual tension between Polly Banks and Austin Shaw have reach an ultimate boiling point in Tessa Bailey's new installment to the Crossing the Line Series. Polly Banks has one thing on her mind. Revenge on the con man who ruined her father's trust. As Polly pursues the man who ruined her family's life, she must be careful if she wants to get out of alive in her dangerous pursuit. But luckily for Polly, she has Austin looking out for her. But the drawback is that Austin is a former con artist. And Polly doesn't trust a con man. So how will Polly be able to let her guard down and see that trusting Austin is her only way out of making sure she succeeds in her plan? Will Polly find herself falling in love with a con artist as she hacks her way to getting justice?
 photo 90c621990a8b50296149046e53c32e_zpsqhwy13kh.gif “God, he loved the woman. Loved her strengths, her vulnerabilities, and everything in between. By some twist of fate, she loved him, too. Every time she said it, he still asked her to repeat herself. ”
Boiling Point was a fast paced romantic suspense that had everything you would want and expect from a Tessa Bailey book. Ms. Bailey never fails to give her readers the full scope as she slowly unfolds layers upon layers of passion, steam, lust, revenge, suspense and love. With her gorgeous and sexy prose, Ms. Bailey will surely have readers reaching a boiling point as we fall madly in love with Polly and Austin. All I can say, this was another great installment to the series and a must read for all you Tessa Bailey fans out there!!!
I have a confession to make. I have never read a book by this author. It is shameful, I know. I'm even a proud member of Bailey's Babes, the author's private group on FB. So when this book popped up on NetGalley, I couldn't request it fast enough. Luckily I got approved, so now I had no excuses.
If you are like me and haven't read this author's books before, it is important to note that while this is the third book in the series, it can be considered a standalone. Each book in the series is a different couple and she gives you enough information on each couple to play catch up.
This book, and the series, seems to focus on people with dangerous illegal skills, who for one reason or another, are now using those skills for good. Austin is a con artist. Polly is a hacker. This story seems to take place months after their first meeting. Initially, they are antagonist towards each other and play a sexy game of cat and mouse. While this book isn't insta-lust per se, as the two get closer together, it seems the attraction was there all along, but neither wanted to make the first move. However, as Polly seeks out revenge against one man, Austin shadows her as protection. That protection and desire to save her, is what finally makes Austin give in.
If there is one thing I've heard about this author's books, is that the men are award winning dirty talkers. And I can now confirm this.
"Any time you want it, all you have to do is bat your eyes at me. I'm a slave to you and this pussy. I don't know how to make it any clearer . . ."
While Austin seems to say all the right things, can you really trust a con artist? Having been torn apart by a con artist already, Polly is leery of his intentions. Does she take advantage of the orgasms? Yes. But she also tries to distance herself to avoid heartache. The dance they played was frustrating at times, but Austin always seems to get them back on course. When they finally begin to trust each other, that's when they use their skills best.
"We are not the sum of our past deeds. There are gray areas and straight-up mistakes, but we can't let them define us."
I loved the suspense element to the story, but I wish is was drawn out more. Their plan to get revenge seemed complex at first, but ended too quickly.
Overall, this was a good introduction to the author and I look forward to reading more of her steamy work. This lady knows how to write a sex scene!
Have to say that when I picked up this book I wasn't expecting the depth of character development this author gives you. I'm really loving the romance suspense genre and this book is a shining example why.
This is the first novel that I have read by this particular author and it was so totally not what I expected but it was so totally awesome. The male lead is flipping hot and I was blown away by this naughty boy with his secret submissive side; his dominant, arrogant, domineering side, plus his filthy dirty mouth. He even has a bit of stalker tendencies about this woman. I fell in love with the whole package! Pun intended....
This book is loaded with hot innuendo, plenty of steam, hot scenes, and a great story to boot. This is totally an author that I am going to be stalking myself. Sometimes the story line was a little difficult to follow and understand what was going on, but the character development and connection these two had makes this book so totally worth the read.
Oh and not to mention Austin- My new book boyfriend! So hot and all in! Yummmmmmmy
If you know me, then you know I love Tessa Bailey’s books, dirty-talking heroes and all. I love how each one of her men is completely besotted with his woman, how his alpha and protective instincts come alive around her. So of course I had high expectations for Boiling Point, especially since I loved the previous two books in the series, and Tessa didn’t disappoint! This read is another winner, full of steam, dirty talk, and suspense. I absolutely loved the way Austin and Polly were together – if you love books with fiery-hot chemistry between the main characters, you’ll want to pick this book up.
Goddammit, he’d never felt an ounce of possessiveness over another human being in his thirty-one years. But just then, he wanted more than anything to walk up behind Polly, wrap an arm around her hips, and drag her back against his lap. Look those tossers right in the eye as he licked up the side of her smooth neck. Mine, you pathetic drunks. You wouldn’t last a minute up against the brilliance of how she thinks. How she reasons and makes decisions. Piss. Right. Off.
While Boiling Point can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the series in order. Each book leads up to the next, and you get a fuller understanding of the backgrounds of the characters. We first meet Polly, a hacker, and Austin, a con man, at the end of Risking It All, get to know them a little better in Up in Smoke and now we finally get their story in Boiling Point. To avoid going to jail, Polly and Austin have been recruited by the Chicago police along with several other interesting individuals to use the skills they’ve illegally honed to catch criminals. They get off to a very antagonist start, in spite of the insanely hot chemistry between them, but when they become partners for a case Polly personally wants to lead, they can’t seem to keep their hands off each other.
I loved how… different Polly and Austin were. Though Polly is a computer hacker, she uses her skills in a very Robin Hood-esque way. She’s pretty aloof and cold towards Austin, angry that he evokes such passion from her, and she is very stubborn when it comes to not falling for his advances. Austin is the con man of the group but beneath the cocky exterior and various disguises and personalities hides a man desperate to be seen – by Polly. He is utterly taken with her from the start, and when she needs his help for a case, he jumps at the chance to help her… and win her heart.
“All yours. You’ve been its cruel keeper for months.” He tilted his hips, presenting himself to her in a way that should have been crude, but on Austin, it was all animal grace. “At any time at all, you could have demanded me. Sent me to my knees to lick you off with one word. Grabbed my cock through my pants in front of everyone and told them who it belonged to.” His eyelids drooped as if the scenario was an aphrodisiac. “Please yourself with me, Polly. My boy. My cock. Own it all.”
An interesting change to Tessa’s typical dirty-talking heroes is that, even while still completely alpha, Austin hands over the reins to Polly when it comes to sex between them. I loved this exchange in control that allows Polly to trust in Austin and deepen the connection between them. And holy hell, the dirty talk. I’ve read almost every single one of Tessa Bailey’s books, but even Austin’s filthy mouth stunned me (and totally turned me on).
I loved Boiling Point – maybe not as much as Risking It All (because Bowen will forever be my all-time favorite hero), but this is still a fantastic, sexy, entertaining read that fans of the author don’t want to miss. I loved getting to see the previous couples in the series, but there’s also an introduction of a new character who will be the hero of the next Crossing the Line book. We get a little background on him, and to say I’m excited for Henrik’s story is an understatement. I can’t wait to see what Tessa has in store for Raw Redemption!
Oh my heart! This was lovely!
Such a kickass adventure filled love story of Polly, the hacker and Austin the con-man.
The book begins where others left off, we discover Austin trying to gain Polly's trust.
As their lives tangle, they embark on a BDSM filled relationship where they both are switch, and though the hero bottoms out- he is always the alpha.
Every time he calls her mistress, every teabag he buys, and every time he follows her- its a declaration of his love and his obsession is so refreshing to read because rarely do I get to read an alpha submissive hero.
Polly on the other hand has her trust issues stemming from the past but her ability to give in to Austin, all the while taking control made me love her.
SCORCHING hot sex scenes, a mission which is connected to both their pasts, old characters are present and new ones are introduced.
I FLOVED THIS.
*Bows to Tessa queen*
I wanted to love it but just couldn't seem to connect with either of the main characters. With that being said I am looking forward to reading Henrik and Ailish's story.
I'm completely addicted and devoted to Tessa Bailey. I try to pace myself and spread out all her books over time but its so difficult to resist. Her characters are just so darn complex and intense that every book is a myriad of discovery and development. In this book a conman and a hacker, part of a mismatched band of ex-criminals, join together to bring down a common enemy. From the first book in the series, Austin and Polly have been circling each other. Little bit here, little bit there...foreplay at its best. Tessa Bailey had a bit of a twist with her alpha but it didn't detract from her usual alpha-caveman-protective guy she usually portrays.
One more to go in this series. How long can I resist?
I made it 30% before giving up this one. I found I was bored when reading it. I put the book down 4 different times in the short amount of time I was reading it and each time it was harder to pick it back up. I didn't get the chemistry between Polly and Austin, weird because I have liked this series and the one it spun off of. In the end this one wasn't for me.
Boiling Point by Tessa Bailey is a 2016 Entangled Select publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This story charges from the gate with incredible promise, as a pair of low level criminals, now working undercover for law enforcement, team up to take down a master con artist whose crimes led to loss of life, a situation that is personal for Polly Banks, a master computer hacker.
Austin Shaw is a jaded con man, a master of disguise, who immediately feels a connection to Polly, and becomes her unsolicited bodyguard, thus worming his way into her lust for revenge against a diabolical con man, a man Austin knows all too well.
Often times book reviewers will post a low rating for a book based on sexual content or language, because they didn’t research the content of it before making a purchase. To me, that’s on the reader. Do your research, read the blurb/synopsis and read some reviews. Check to see if the book is listed in the erotic categories etc. In my case, I read the blurb, but the book was offered pre-release, and so I went with my impression this was a basic romantic suspense novel, with a high heat level. (Although the cover might have given me clue otherwise, if I had been paying more attention)
Sadly, the plot, which was a little bit like a cross between White Collar and Leverage, which had huge potential, was delegated to second chair in favor of a lot of silly sounding dialogue and entirely too many sex scenes.
BDSM is out of my comfort zone, and I avoid books with that element, although in some instances I can deal with that, if it is a small section of the story and the plot is worth sticking it out for. In this case, though, the plot wasn’t given enough attention and so the book is basically erotica with a thin storyline thrown in.
Now I find myself in a conundrum because this genre is not my favorite. So, I put on my critical thinking cap and tried to distance myself from any personal likes and dislikes in order to give this book a fair review.
First of all, this book is a part of a series, another thing I failed to realize, but I’m not sure if that makes any real difference unless there are recurring characters who play a big role or the plot line crosses over in some way from one installment to the next, which could be the case here, since Austin apparently has a wild and crazy background that has left him with a lot of baggage to clean up. If his story was addressed in a previous chapter of this series, then by all means you need to read the other books first. If it was not mentioned, then the author did a very poor job of outlining his situation more fully, because I was left feeling mostly confused by his backstory.
Secondly, this book is erotic/erotica first and romantic suspense second. If you read this type of material, then perhaps the dialogue will be familiar to you. There is nothing too emotionally deep here, with the dialogue consisting of dirty talk and lots of sexual demands and not much else. This set up is most likely the norm for this genre, but I would like to have seen the characters fleshed out more so that I could feel something toward them, which I had a very hard time doing.
Lastly, I can’t say I’m familiar enough with this type of ‘romance’ to give readers an informed opinion of it, try as I might. But, as far as the writing goes, I thought the characters needed more development, the backstories needed fleshing out, because even if someone is following along with a series, a few reminders of what took place previously is always a good idea, especially if the stories tend to bleed over into the next book in one way or another. The conclusion was a little rushed and that was too bad, because again, if the plot had been given a little more attention, I could have dealt with some of the other issues I had with the book.
Overall, this was not my cup of tea ,but if you like erotica with elements of BDSM then you may find this book to your liking.
Overall, this one gets two stars.
Scorching. Sexy as he**. Dirty....oh, so dirty. Arousing. Provocative. There aren't the right words to express how hot this book is. If you've read the author before, then be prepared for even more erotic intensity, more explicitly filthy moments, ...just MORE of everything you've read from her before. This is because Austin and Polly are easily the most well developed, complex characters she's yet written. I was given a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
This can be read as a standalone, although Austin appears in the previous book and we start to get to know him from other's eyes. From the outside he's an arrogant, self righteous jerk who is an expert con artist without any regrets about it. Yes, he's still that person but we learn who he is on the inside too...and that's an insecure man who hides behind whatever mask he's wearing. He's done it so long he's not even sure who the real Austin is anymore. Everyone thinks he's self centered, but he IS capable of loving someone and when he does he loves with his whole being. But the past he's tried so hard to get away from comes back to cause havoc in the new life he's trying to build.
Polly has loads of issues due to her past, the biggest being that she can't stand to be physically touched. It literally feels like it's burning her and sends her into a severe state of panic. That may sound extreme, but when we find out why it becomes more understandable. She's been able to successfully live this way for years until Austin enters the picture. As soon as he walked in to the meeting where they met for the first time she was insanely attracted to him and knew she wanted him. He felt the same way, but her problem with being touched is a huge relationship barrier.
Austin is patient and supportive, and eventually gains her unwavering trust. She opens herself up more to him that she ever has in her whole life. Until both of their secrets are revealed and then it seems like no matter what, someone is going to get hurt. Their faith in one another is tested and they're either going to be stronger after it's all done or they're going to be broken.
The twists and turns in this story kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next. Austin continually shocked me with the lengths he went to in order to prove his feelings for Polly. This story has it all- suspense, action, romance...everything you want in a fantastic 5 star read!
Ohhh yes! Better and better... Ok I need to gather my thoughts. Full review to come. ;) Austin... coming... ❤ *drools*
Ok I'm back... But I fear I still don't know how to word this review to get my boiling point across, that being how amazeballs this book was! It was so unexpected for me. I honestly didn't think I could like any of these characters as much as I love my Bowen ❤ so I was a little nervous. I read Risking It All when it first came out so it had been a while. And I get impatient and testy so I wanted to read Up In Smoke right away, but I decided to wait. So I read that right before I read Boiling Point. And I'm glad I did, because that gave me a little more insight to Austin and Polly. And while Bowen is still my #1, Connor and Austin have definitely been added to my faves list!
Austin was not who I thought he was going to be. He was so. much. BETTER!! He's this hot shot alpha male who has such a depth to him that he didn't even see it. He just needed a tiny little feisty hacker to show him the way. There is an unexpected twist (for lack of a better term) to Austin when it comes to his and Polly's relationship. I wasn't sure how that was going to work, but TB sure enough blew that right out of the park. So. Damn. Hot. 'nuff said.
Polly was pretty amazeballs in her own right. I loved that she was on a mission and would not be deterred. Then here comes this big, arrogant, cocky hunk of a man throwing a wrench in her plans.
These two had such chemistry from the beginning, I knew when they finally got together it was gonna be gooood! ;) Oh and was it! Mrs. Bailey sure knows how to write her dirty talkin, smokin sex scenes! I seriously could not put this book down! I basically read it in one sitting. It has all the classic Tessa Bailey characteristics I love. Good writing, great characters that are well developed with underlying issues that get fleshed out. ;) Smoking hot sexin. And a story line that keeps me interested from the first page to the last.
I'd love to go into more detail all about this book, but I don't want to spoil it. I know, I know. That's not usually my style, but sometimes you just gotta go in blind to experience the awesomeness for yourself. I have loved every Tessa Bailey book I've read, and Boiling Point has definitely been added to that list.
This is the 3rd installment of the Crossing the Line series, and the best so far, in my humble opinion. Austin Shaw is a con man extraordinaire, cocky and sure of himself. But he has been in the game so long he doesn't know where the con man ends or where Austin begins. Polly Banks is a hacker, and hates con men, but something about Austin sets her on fire. Polly tries valiantly to not fall victim to Austin's charms, but when she gets a glimpse of the man behind the mask, she can't help but be intrigued. Both Polly and Austin have secrets, big secrets. And when Polly has to help Austin in the biggest con of his life, it might prove too much for their new found love.
This story is fraught with sexual tension and angst, when people who hate each other give into their desire for each other, it's explosive! Polly and Austin are complicated people, both of them display a hard shell to the world, but together they discover each others softer side. The love scenes were something new from Mrs. Bailey, and I have to say I very much enjoyed Austin's submissive tendencies. This story packs some serious heat!
A great supporting cast of familiar characters, and one new and intriguing character help to add humor and tons of witty banter. As always Tessa Bailey brings it, I love her tough on the outside, gooey on the inside characters and interesting and intriguing story lines.
DNF @ 35% I usually love Tessa Bailey's stories, but this book is just not working for me. I don't like the h at all, and I don't feel the connection between the MC's. I'm not a fan of either character mistreating the other, no matter the circumstances.
How is it possible that Tessa Bailey's books only seem to be getting sexier? Each time I read a new book by this author, I think that it's hands-down the sexiest book I've read...until I get my hands on her next release. Boiling Point is the third book in the author’s Crossing the Line series – a series with a heat factor that’s already off-the-charts, yet the author truly outdid herself with Austin and Polly’s story. The sheer amount of highlighted quotes in my Kindle…but I digress. The twisted game of seduction between Austin and Polly is interspersed with a high-stakes investigation, blurring the lines between personal and professional for the two criminals-turned-undercover agents. Boiling Point is an entertaining thrill ride, rife with nonstop sensuality, pulse-pounding danger, and gut-wrenching emotions.
There's nothing I love more than delving into the heart of a character, learning what makes them tick and getting to see past what they show to the outside world. Tessa Bailey excels at baring her characters' souls on the pages, which makes it easier to become invested in their stories. I've been desperate to find a book that would draw me in completely – to engage both my mind and my heart – and Boiling Point unquestionably fit the bill with Austin and Polly at its helm. The combination of Austin – the sharp and assessing con artist, ever at the ready with a quick-witted barb – and Polly – the mysterious computer hacker with a score to settle – was nothing short of riveting. Together, the two were unpredictable, challenging each other every step of the way with a push-and-pull dynamic that exposed both their strengths and their vulnerabilities. Their relationship isn't about romance and sweet words; it's primal and raw and desperate.
While reading earlier books in Tessa Bailey’s Crossing the Line series, Austin and Polly were the two characters I found to be the most intriguing because they were wildcards and I was anxious to unveil their innermost secrets. Boiling Point exceeded my expectations, bringing the steam and the feels. With its undertones of danger and suspense, characters that are edgy and mysterious, and love scenes so unbelievably sexy they're guaranteed to set your lady parts a’quiverin’, Boiling Point is a fast-paced, addictive page-turner, and a guaranteed 5 Star read.
