Kim Kardashian: The ‘soap opera’ tabloid narrative of my life ‘took a toll on me’

kim editorialist

Kim Kardashian covers the Spring/Summer issue of The Editorialist. And when I say “Kim Kardashian,” I mean her face and body from like two years ago. This is clearly an older photo, but that’s fine. Kim doesn’t want to be seen or photographed until she’s lost more of the pregnancy weight, although word around the street is that she’ll make her first post-baby appearance tomorrow at her husband’s Yeezy show at New York Fashion Week. Kanye’s already tweeted a preview of what he’s going to make Kim wear, and it’s awful and it makes me feel sorry for her. Thankfully, that sympathetic pang disappeared when I started to read these quotes from The Editorialist. Some highlights:

Kim is in control of the family brand: “It’s so funny because I’ll hear stories like, ‘Kris Jenner is the puppet master, having all of her kids do this and that,’ and I’m like, ‘If they only knew.’ I’m the one that will be like ‘Kylie Jenner do this…Kendall Jenner you should do this.’ My mom facilitates it all and gives great opinions, and she’s been so helpful to manage everything, but it’s really a collaboration. I take full responsibility over my brand.”

She loves privacy: “The biggest misconception about our family is that we don’t allow privacy and that we don’t have any [privacy]. That’s just completely wrong. My mornings are so important to me so I can get [North] up. I work during the day, and hopefully I’m there to put her down at night, which is most of the time. I like to have a really good balance between filming and sharing information on our apps…and balancing it all.”

The book of selfies, Selfish, was Kanye’s idea: “It was [Kanye’s] idea to do the book of selfies, he picked the name, and he introduced me to Rizzoli. The book is so fun and cool, and no one has ever done a book of selfies before. I really value his opinion, and I trust his opinion, especially aesthetically. But I work a lot with my sisters, so sometimes three opinions is all you can handle.”

She’s working on a new perfume: “I’m working on a new fragrance right now, and that makes me really excited. I love the beauty business. I took a second away just to figure out what I wanted the fragrance brand to be.”

Her relationship with the press & tabloid media: “I would say I’m a really realistic person. At the beginning of my career, [the press] made me—or maybe not ‘made me’ but was such a big part of my career. And then, I feel like when I got a divorce, it kind of turned on me, and the people I would do interviews with, who I thought were my friends, just did not understand me. And so it was all of these made-up stories, and this whole story line like a soap opera [started to form]…I saw that happening, and it really took a toll on me. I’m strong. I can handle it. But I took some time off. [Looking] back now, it was great for me. I learned how to live a more private life. It’s also hard, you know. My husband lives really a more private life, and I…don’t. So it’s the combination of figuring it out—he’s really opened up, which has been great, and I’ve closed off and learned how to just take our alone time with him. And I’ve never really done that before, take time for myself.”

Her dreams for North: “When North was born, I used to pray, ‘Can she handle this life?’ Because it’s a lot to come into, a family that has the spotlight on them, and it’s very public. But I really believe people come into our lives, and they choose us, and she knows what her life is going to be. I value my relationship with her so much. I want to become best friends with her to the [point that] she can ask me anything. My hope for her is that she is just really kind to people and grows up as normal as possible within all of the chaos.”

[From E! news]

Just a note about the perfume… I’ve read several beauty-industry-analysis pieces over the years, and most experts believe that if a celebrity comes up with a perfume that works, it’s like minting money. Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez both have major successes with their perfumes (I wear J.Lo’s Glow and I love it), and for both of those women, their successful perfumes are big chunks of their empires. But would you buy a Kardashian perfume? The thing about that is… I don’t believe that Kim and I would like the same scents. I bet she’s more YSL Opium and I’m more Estee Lauder Private Collection.

As for the rest of it… I believe Kim has a lot to say about her sisters’ branding, possibly more than Kris. I believe Kim thinks the press turned against her when she divorced Kris Humphries. I also believe that she walks around on eggshells to please Kanye.

Lipo is all done. Ready to go back out in public

  2. minx says:

Oh please! If there was no “soap opera” she wouldn’t exist as a “celebrity.”

  3. lkaye says:

Have you seen pictures of her from last night? Her face looks completely different, again.

    • minx says:

Yet another nose job, it looks like. She looks like Octomom.

      • saras says:

Yaaaasss! So crazy she is well under 40 and is so monstrously overworked. She has more money than octomom but same class level. Lol

    • Kitten says:

WHAT is going on with her face? Is that fillers or weight gain or…????

      • Arock says:

It looks like she had a liquid lift. Botox and fillers like rejuvaderm can give that pulled effect in a less dramatic way than a facelift. wear black and body sliming clothes, gives the look of weight loss.
        Suspect , looking nose tho….

      • SydneySnider says:

And the French braids… It has been said that she adopts a new hairstyle when she buys a new face, so that people focus (more) on the hair. After a while, she reverts to her usual centre part, either with or without pony tail. The theory is that, by that time, everyone is used to the new face and believe it was just the hair making her look “different”.

    • Zip says:

      What? Where?

      • Petee says:

On the Daily Mail. Her face look’s like it’s pulled to tight and she looks uncomfortable and self conscience.

      • Ennie says:

I took a look and she still looks overweight, normal for a regular woman. I expect Kanye to say that Kim does not look the same as he said about Amber Rose, hello! they had children!
Her face looks bloated , strange, probably because of the procedures and botox and the weight gain on her face.
She’s covering her stomach with her hands, and her a** and arms with that big coat.
Will she do a nude dread after this birth, like she did after the birth of North, that awful Prada spread?
I find a few of the lines she says here revealing.
Like what she said about North coming into this sort of family, they are not stopping their hustling ever. They live off it. IF the show ever stops, they’ll get a show for the younger ones, a-la Duggars, also what she said about taking full responsibility for her brand, so she sold her tape and looks for new story lines for herself. What a sad existence.
Living a sort of double life where reality mixes with fiction for the sake of money, complaining about the tabloids when they are the ones feeding and creating the stories.
They are the worst of the worst.

      • Zip says:

Uh, now I’ve seen them, too. Her face looks even weirder than before. Man, she used to be gorgeous years ago.

@Enni: I think the coat makes her look overweight. In some pics it looks like she’s got that artificial hourglass figure back. Her waist / stomach area looks quite slim.

      • lucy says:

She is the spitting image of Amber Rose now only with hair!
        *shudder*

      • Clau says:

@lucy, Yes I agree … Kim looks like Amber Rose…

  4. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I can only imagine what the new fragrance will smell like. Money? Does vapid have a smell?

  5. catwoman says:

She used to be so pretty. Delusional, but pretty.

  6. Mia V. says:

WTF is Kanye making her wear? I can’t figure if it’s a headpiece or a bellypiece or a chandelier. It must be real true love to wear that kind of krap to please your husband.
And her face actually looks good on the cover.

    • Holmes says:

That’s because the cover image is three or four faces ago.

      • word says:

What was the point of the magazine doing that though? Why not get a NEW pic, which is what people are more interested in (Kim knows they could and would photoshop her to death anyways). This makes no sense. Actually why interview Kim at all? She’s just full of lies.

  7. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

So Kanye suggested she do the book that utterly failed…and he’s suggesting she wear clothes that look horrific on her, and slamming Puma for offering a plum modeling/advertising job to Kylie.

You know what. I will give Kim one compliment now. Before Kanye her drama was clearly manufactured. It was low cost and never gave too much of an appearance of things being out of control in Kardashian Headquarters.

Lately though, I’m seeing more and more chinks in the armor through him and the other men the women choose to be involved with. Especially with that Cosby tweet.

Wonder if Kim’s ready to have those same photographers/interviewers she thought loved her demanding if she supports a rapist? Not so easy to pose and smile through that.

    • Mia V. says:

Kim was an indepent woman before getting married, she had her “job”, her money, her things and suddenly she lets a misogynist, delusional idiot dress her and tell her what to do cause he is above her. She doesn’t love him, she seeks validation from the fashion world and Kanye, God knows how, have it. And she’ll stick with him cause she wants to be taken seriously.

      • Tifygodess says:

Marrying kanye saved the Ks “careers” and they all know it. The family was on a fast sinking ship after Kim announced divorce after 72 days and everyone started to see them for who they really are. That’s why I will never believe Kim married Kanye for love, she married him for what he could bring her. And it clearly worked, the media jumped right on the new high profile relationship and scandal and once again the Ks turned a turd into a diamond.

      • SydneySnider says:

I agree, Mia, and I’ve begun to think that Kanye needs their validation and total worship, too. I get the feeling it’s an enabling, codependent, mutually-beneficial arrangement .

    • Tifygodess says:

Yes!! Kanye was completely manic on Twitter last night just like he has been of late. The Cosby tweet was the last straw for me with his nonsense. He acts like he controls the whole family (and maybe he does, he clearly has taken them a step up in legitimacy) but they need to stop listening. Everything you pointed out is so true. I swear I have a feeling this whole family is about to implode. They have been hustling harder than ever and the backlash is growing.

      • Shaunna says:

Last week Kanye was owning Whiz/Amber’s baby and this week he says Cosby is innocent. What a freak!

  8. lassie says:

Will there be a cape? She was working the cape to cover her (and these are her words) ‘fat arms’. Also think it was to cover the huge butt. Did the lipo fix this, so she can show them, or will the cape come out?

  9. yolo says:

Kayne’s tweet and pic of what she’s going to wear…omg…what the hell is that!? And I guess Kim’s going to walk the runway in his show this year…uuuugghhhh.. can’t wait to see her new skinny body and beautiful face.
    *sarcasm*

    • Lirko says:

It looked like feathers, right? Can you imagine being a few months postpartum and in a dress made of feathers? I’m thinking Kanye isn’t understanding how vulnerable many women feel in these early months, but then again, I doubt he cares. Anything to get attention, even if it means making your wife feel like big bird..

  10. greenmonster says:

So Kanye really lives a private life and… she doesn’t. But she has privacy. Am I misreading something in her quotes or is Kim just contradicting herself?

  11. HH says:

This actually wasn’t a bad interview, well, from the highlights I read here.

  12. Lin says:

I found it weird that you always mention JLO and Britney as celebrities with significantly successful fragrance lines so I did a quick check. Turns out that until January 2015, Elizabeth Taylor Had the best-selling celebrity fragrance followed by Derek Jeter (*blank*),closely followed by Beyoncé and Britney. But since January 2015, Beyoncé has the best-selling celebrity fragrance line on the market. *read previous sentence in your best Kanye voice*

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Wait Derek Jeter has a cologne?

Okay where are they stocking these things that supposadly sell so well?? I have NEVER seen his cologne in the perfume section of the mall.

    • yolo says:

So, I have a confession… I actually love Brit’s ‘Curious’ perfume. *hangs head in shame* It pulls up some throw back memories to my youth because it smells like a shampoo Revlon used to make called Outrageous. I’m always embarrassed to say what it is when someone asks what I’m wearing because…you know, it’s some $20 CVS hook up, but every time, the person asking gets all wide eyed with approval.

  13. Tiffany says:

When Kim was in our face all the, there was an indifference to her. Sure there were stories every hour on the hour but, eh. Then the engagement and marriage to Kris, again, eh. Then Yeesus came and it was like gold for awhile because two of the most idiotic people got together to entertain me.

Now, lies, contradiction, and more stupidity. I should not project my feelings for Ye on to her, but Kim is making it really hard not to.

  14. lexx says:

I really truly hope and pray, North find like bell hooks book. And then becomes this anti capitalist hardcore feminist. And then writes essays and talks about the damage her mother’s family and legacy does to women . And she becomes this advocate for black women. Just so I can Kim’s subsequent breakdown. and laugh and laugh and laugh.

    • Ennie says:

      You think?
She’s going to be groomed to become like her younger aunts. I can see them raising the children to take over what they do. The least offensive thing is doing something like Brooklyn Beckham or Cindy’s or Johnny Depp’s daughters, getting them contracts and jobs due to their fame and instagram followers.
It must pain them that they cannot exploit the children as they could, openly, without looking bad.

  15. lisa2 says:

This looks like an interview that was cut and paste from some others. IIRC she has said some of those things before. And no mention of the new baby at all. (or did I miss it)

    • Jwoolman says:

It was obviously a set of written responses to questions, and not written by Kim. She doesn’t talk or write like that.

  16. lucy2 says:

“no one has ever done a book of selfies before” For good reason. And LOL at him suggesting the title Selfish to her. Read between the not-so-subtle lines?
This whole family manufactured a career out of their private lives, and created the soap opera she’s complaining about. Cry me a Botox river.

    • Lirko says:

And they celebrate the things about themselves that creep most people out. In their minds, I think, anything is justifiable if it makes them money. They sell their dignity, and they go on about what savy business people they are. It’s like watching a train wreck of profoundly base pop culture and the capitalism at its worst.

  17. OTHER RENEE says:

She likes to get up with North and that’s probably the only time she sees that child til the next day.

  18. FingerBinger says:

Kim is working on a new fragrance but the old fragrance didn’t sell. Khloe and Lamar’s unisex fragrance didn’t sell either.

  19. grabbyhands says:

So she’s saying that she is the one that encouraged her kid sister’s relationship with her pedo boyfriend and made it feel like to was a good idea to start surgically messing with her face and body before it had even finished growing?

She may be the puppet master now, but she certainly learned all of her horrifying lessons from her mother.

    • Lirko says:

I remember reading an interview with Khloe where she says something like “Kim and my mom are so similar, they could actually be the same person”. I thought that was rather telling.

  20. QQ says:

I don’t feel sorry for her, i feel sorry for her kids, on a related aside Kanye just burned his last bridge with that Bill cosby tweet yesterday, check #kanyeisCancelledParty Hashtag for your giggles

  21. paolanqar says:

No no Kim. You have it all wrong.
Kris Jenner is the human Big bang.
She was able to create an empire from a bunch of soulless girls with no education, no standards, no self respect and self obsessed.
Kris could sell ice lollies to penguins. She hustles like no one before.
She’s the only person I have a bit of respect for in that family: she is a terrible mother but she is the savviest businesswoman of our century and she has been able to give her children a life that they could have never have had otherwise.
Once Kris is gone, the Kardashians will be gone. They’re all robots, they just follow what Kris says without questioning her decisions.

    • Ally8 says:

I thought it was interesting, the pap shots of her going for lunch with various legit celebrities recently. For example Cindy Crawford — I took their lunch as Cindy preparing to start mom-aging her daughter’s modelling career (or learning how to have her daughter’s career NOT take the Kylie Jenner route).

Despite the vacuity and sleaze of the enterprise, the sheer ability of Kris Jenner to generate vast amounts of money out of not much seems to have earned her cred among “respectable” Hollywood types.

    • Jwoolman says:

Kim comes across as dull normal in intelligence. She’s not a mastermind. In spontaneous interviews (not written), she doesn’t talk like a business person or a mastermind. She does what other people tell her when they can do something for her. No independent woman would wear the terrible stuff Kanye has been foisting on her. Her ambition has always been to be famous. That’s it. She was already rich, but money is not the primary driving force. She lives for the camera.

  22. Mylene-Montreal says:

mark my words … she will be see like a hero the day she will divorce kanye west for all his mental illness behavior in 5 or 6 years … she willl have recognition there

  23. NewWester says:

“Her dreams for North” What about her son? Kim has no hopes and dreams for him? Something is very off there, I just can’t figure out what it is

    • Zip says:

Maybe it’s an old interview? Have they even talked about him publicly yet?

      • SydneySnider says:

Zip, she did say Saint is sooooooooo keeewwwwt…. “He looks just like me!!!”

      • yolo says:

“he looks just like me”… Uuuhhh, which her?? The ‘her’ from 15 years ago, 5 years ago, 3 years ago or last month cuz we all see what has happened to her…and it’s not good.

      • word says:

She also initially said North looked like her. Yeah and Kim doesn’t even look like herself anymore. She does realize that when you get plastic surgery your genes don’t change right lol?

  24. swak says:

I always felt that she would reveal her post pregnancy body as one of the models for Kanye’s fashions. So it does not surprise me this is her coming out. As far as wanting to be North’s friend – please, be a parent and a proper one.

    • NeNe says:

I’m sure as soon as North turns 18, her so called “Mother” will encourage her to make her own porn take as well!!!

    • Lirko says:

I know that bff with her daughter comment was so sad to me. It’s possible to have a great relationship with your child and still retain the parent/child boundary. I know she has said this was how Kris raised her (and it shows)

  25. Marie-France says:

    RUDE. I love YSL Opium!

    • Holmes says:

What was rude? She didn’t even say that she didn’t like it. It’s now considered rude to have fragrance preferences?

      • Lirko says:

My mother’s generation all seemed to adore Shalimar…i can’t wrap my mind around it, but it just goes to show how different we react to and perceive smells.

  26. NeNe says:

Oh, give me a friggen break! She’s so F.O.S,. that it’s pouring out of her mouth. Just famewh*ring some more!!!

  27. Naddie says:

Did this stupid book sell a lot? What kind of person buy this shit anyway.

  28. EscapedConvent says:

The narrative of your life took a toll on us, too, Kim.

  29. word says:

Did anyone see Kim’s tweets where she lashed out at Daily Mail for the headline of their story? She said she was never in “exile” and just on maternity leave. Yeah ok Kim. You hid because you didn’t want anyone to see you until you lost the baby weight. Stop lying. The DM went and changed the title of the story. Damn they are so far up Kim’s ass.

    • Ennie says:

They are fed by them, of course. They have to keep in line with what they say to get more “exclusive” (photoshopped) pics.

  30. dawn says:

I believe nothing she says…absolutely nothing. Other’s can lap it up if they want but I refuse.

    • NeNe says:

I’m with you Dawn. i don’t believe anything that comes out of her mouth, or out of the mouths of any of the others. They are so full of themselves. Fake, fake, and more fake!!!

  31. lucy says:

How dare anyone who so aggressively pursued fame and pseudo-celebrity status even hint at complaining about it. Shame on anyone who gives this family money or other encouragement to continue polluting pop culture with untreated narcissism!

  32. DEB says:

The divorce drama horsesh*t was totally and completely self-inflicted – for money and attention, as per usual.

    • Jwoolman says:

Yes, people “turned against her” because they were appalled by her behavior. She treated her husband like dirt after the fancy wedding, dissed his family, let him find out she filed for divorce 72 days later in the media, obviously never talked with him off camera, faked scenes for her show to make him look bad and engaged in smear campaigns. Plus she pocketed the money from wedding gifts for herself and didn’t return them to the givers, after compiling an obscenely expensive bridal registry. And she fought the reasonable request for an annulment.

I still think the rush to divorce was because she wanted to trade up to Kanye, to further her ambitions. Kris Humphries was just needed for the fancy wedding. Kanye pointed out that he was now single and too bad she was married or else they could get together, and she tripped on her own feet getting to the courthouse faster than a speeding bullet…

  33. Emily C. says:

“she knows what her life is going to be”

North’s a toddler! She only recently learned to poop in a toilet, she doesn’t know what her life is going to be! My god, that poor child.

I would love if North decided to be a scientist or something, but realistically I think she has no chance. She’s as trapped in the Kardashian clan as anyone born into a cult is. She’ll probably be homeschooled and disallowed from imagining any other life.

    • Ennie says:

They’ll tell her “this is what makes money”. And since that is their god…

    • me says:

Have you noticed how that poor kid always has a lolly pop in her mouth when in public? I wonder is this to keep her from talking to the paps and spilling some secrets lol?

  34. SM says:

She is so delusional it’s almost funny

  35. Crispy says:

    “we don’t have any [privacy]”

Hahahaha, delusional. Says the woman whose mum released her homemade p0rno film.

  36. Kate says:

Here is an idea, Kim. Don’t feed the beast.

  37. Jwoolman says:

Oh, please. If Kim spent the time she claims with Nori, we would see normal body language between Nori and Kim in public. We don’t, so she doesn’t.

  38. sunshine gold says:

“At the beginning of my career” – it just sounds so funny.
