Boy, 11, attacked by dog in Costa Mesa

An 11-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after a dog his neighbor was fostering attacked him in Costa Mesa, police said.

The boy was walking down the street at about 7:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of Nancy Lane when he passed by his neighbor’s house, where the front door was left open, said Costa Mesa Sgt. Jerry Souza.

A dog, identified as a pit bull being fostered by the boy’s neighbors, came outside and saw the boy who was scared and started to run away. The dog chased the boy and bit him on his right leg. Some of the lacerations were four to six inches in length.

The boy was taken to Kaiser Permanente in Irvine for evaluation.

The dog was impounded and quarantined while animal control conducts an investigation into the dog’s history and vaccine status. It is unclear whether it will be euthanized.
