Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) said in an interview with Huffington Post’s “So, That Happened” podcast on Friday that Congress’ inaction has made it complicit in America’s mass shootings.
“Congress’ silence in the face of this rash of mass shootings has become complicity,” Murphy told HuffPost. “I really do believe that people take cues from the highest level of government, the highest levels of public service. We are essentially sending a message of quiet endorsement of these murders.”
Murphy formerly served in the U.S. House and represented Connecticut’s 5th District, which includes Newtown, during the deadly 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 children and six staff members dead.
“We are the only country in the world that looks at this rate of slaughter, which is unprecedented amongst industrialized first world countries, and throws our hands up and says we can’t do anything!” Murphy said. “I’ve never been more offended by anything in my life than the absolute, utter inability of Congress to even have a debate about how we might be able to do things differently.”
