US superstars Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds and Toni Braxton lit up a nippy Harare night in the first leg of their maiden tour of Africa.
After all the yap, it was always going to be down to the performances, because after all, that is what the people had paid for.
Babyface started off the night with a few favourites from For The Cool In You among others.
The crowd sang to every song, sometimes screeching in an effort to get into sync with his perfect mastery of music.
Then, boom he hit us with songs from his amazing catalogue of hits he has created for others from Midnight Star in 1983 to years later with Babyface.
This was before he finished off his set with Whip Appeal, a favourite of our boss who lost his cool, when the song came on.
After changes in stages, Toni came on with her sisters. She was in a crazy all white outfit. Crazy because it drove us crazy more than anything else. She played favourites again from her early albums.
On three ocaassion she got members of the audience to join her before getting an immaculately dressed Babyface back on stage to perform songs from the 2015 Grammy-Award winning album Love Marriage and Divorce.
Oh did we mentioned she did the whole first verse of Notorious BIG’s Big Poppa.
Both put on great shows although we leaned a bit more towards Babyface because of the nature of his performance notwithstanding the time he walked into the crowd. We liked and just him as clean consummate performer.
All in all it was a great night and those who chose to boycott the show for various reasons missed out. Sure the crowd could have been better but those who were present had a night to remember, creating new memories sometimes mounted on old ones.
VVIP was sold out pretty quickly as the well-healed sought their moment out in the beautiful night of Harare. VIP didn’t get as much love and neither did the general areas but those who were present had a time to remember and at the end of the day that is what you want.
Class is class we say. We love it.
