BAFTA Scholarship Programme

B

AFTA has a major role to play in supporting new talent – both by identifying and rewarding emerging talent by connecting them with established practitioners and offering financial assistance for postgraduate courses related to film, television or games. Scholarships are awarded annually across programmes in the UK, USA and now in China. In 2014, Emily Ellis was awarded £7,500 to help fund her MA in 3D Computer Administration at Bournemouth University. Now a BAFTA scholar, Emily has secured her first job as a 3D animation artist at Random 42. She is continuing to grow her portfolio through several other projects, including film and games projects, with contacts she has gained whilst on the BAFTA Scholarship programme.

The foundations of my entire future have been changed by this huge act of kindness, and my selfbelief reaffirmed, leaving nothing but immense gratitude and excitement.

BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum

T

he BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum is a platform for aspiring screenwriters to have their work performed and an opportunity to take their writing career to the next level. Participants benefit from an invaluable opportunity to test out new material and gain advice from experienced industry members. Originally hailing from Wales, Kayleigh Llewellyn and Matthew Barry were winners of BAFTA Rocliffe in 2012 with their sitcom pilot Grey. The duo have continued their success, writing episodes for Casualty and Stella alongside developing original

material, such as Public Saints for TV and Bampy with Radio 4. Kayleigh has also recently written and starred in short film Oh Be Joyful, an official selection of the 59th BFI London Film Festival and the London Short Film Festival 2016. Matthew is currently writing on the fifth series of Death in Paradise and original drama series Cookie Dough with BBC Wales.

Winning BAFTA Rocliffe New York 2012 was akin to being awarded a Golden Ticket into the industry. It was the launching pad we needed to bring our project to the attention of the top comedy commissioners. A T T H E R OCLIFFE FORUM I N N E W YOR K IN 2012

BAFTA Young Game Designers (YGD)

B

AFTA Young Game Designers offers 10–18 year olds, their teachers and mentors unique access to the games industry and its top professionals via competitions, online teaching tools and social networks. They are given the chance to learn about digital technology and the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects by creating an idea for their own video game, creating the game itself, learning from professionals and further developing their winning games. In 2015, competition entries doubled. Amongst the winners is Camylle Tuliao, who, aged 11, received the 10–14 years Game Concept Award for her roleplay game, Dreams. Camylle has blogged extensively about how her experience in the competition has boosted her confidence and her hopes to see more girls entering the competition in the future. As part of her prize, Camylle was able to see her game concept become a reality and be showcased in front of HRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Our band: Three and a Half Men

W

ith their rich four-part harmonies, stripped-back acoustic arrangements and ingenious mashups that put a surprising twist on forgotten classics, Three and a Half Men have a knack for making every song their own – whether it’s Smokey Robinson’s The Tracks of My Tears, Rihanna’s We Found Love or Wheatus’ Teenage Dirtbag. All graduates of Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, these four talented singers and instrumentalists have played for Poppy Delevigne and Jo Malone – as well as performing at the Monaco Grand Prix for Red Bull Racing, in their own right. From sixties soul to mainstream pop to indie rock, these four cheeky chappies have something up their sleeves to charm everyone.

Our auctioneer: Humphrey Butler

H

umphrey Butler Ltd was founded in June 2000 by Humphrey Butler, a former auction house specialist with over twenty-two years’ experience in the international jewellery field working for both Christie’s and Sotheby’s. The firm is now one of the most respected independent dealerships in London handling vintage jewellery, Humphrey has been a regular feature on the charity auctioneering circuit, taking sales on behalf of a number of UK and overseas causes. These have included such high profile charities as

The Prince’s Trust, The Red Cross, The Royal Marsden, The Arsenal Foundation, Breast Cancer Haven, R ADA, The Countryside Alliance and Juvenile Diabetes. This has led to requests from abroad and having been a part of Harvey Weinstein’s celebrity strewn amfAR party at the Cannes Film Festival for many years, Humphrey now takes the hammer for America’s two highest grossing charity wine auctions, Auction Napa Valley in California and The Naples Winter Wine Festival in Florida. We are delighted to welcome Humphrey back to the Film Gala for its second year.
